Hyundai puts on this run to bring awareness to the start of pediatric cancer awareness month. The expo area is dedicated to children with activities rather then the usual vendors. The event begins with a 100 yard dash for the kids.
Taking place at Fountain Valley’s Mile Square Park (Brookhurst side), more then likely you will have a bit of a walk to get to the event site (unless you come ridiculously early like me). The park has some nice scenery but the section of the park isn’t as nice as some of the other parts. Still it is flat and fast.
This is a nice event yet it struck me how few people participated. I ran 4 out of the last 5 years and the one year I missed was because I didn’t know it was happening. That almost happened this year. Hyundai apparently does not reach out to any agencies (like Active) to promote. Although they have my contact info they do not send out any reminders. That is a shame because it is a good cause and for the most part the production is nice. Last year they did a Living Social tie in and had a pretty good crowd. This year they seemed happy just to have Hyundai employees there. I was reminded of the run by someone else who saw something somewhere.
There is a 10K and I think I only saw about 20 people for it. According to the results only 438 participated in the 5k.
The 5k started later then expected at 8:37am. According to my GPS their Mile 1 was at the .7 mile point….the Mile 2 was at the 1.53 mile mark…so I thinking – is this run going to end at 2.25 miles?….I do not recall a Mile 3 marker but the run ended at 2.93 miles….so what the? How did that get so screwed up?
The medal is nice. I hope they can fix some of the little things and get the word out next year.
Great Cause; Nearly a 5K
