Experience the authenticity of a Swiss mountain community at the Helvetia 10k Mountain Run. This race is located in Helvetia, West Virginia in southern Randolph County and coincides with the Helvetia Fair.
This race follows portions of an original Swiss settlement trail and passes right through the center of Helvetia. Beginning in 1998, this event was Jody and Dan Lehmann’s first attempt at race directing and served as the inspiration for what has become WVMTR. Each year, this race’s t-shirt features a coat of arms from a different canton — or territory — of Switzerland. Be on the lookout for the heraldic animal of the bear, featured on the Canton of Bern’s flag, standing perennial guard over Clay Hill!
The 10K run is a challenging mix of paved road, dirt road and mountainous trail. The course follows a portion of the route the original Swiss settlers used when first coming to the area in October 1869. You will be crossing creeks and enjoying beautiful views. The first 2 miles are flat along the banks of the Buckhannon River. The next 2.5 miles is a gradual climb of 750 feet along Upper Trout Run to a scenic hilltop, hence the name Mountain Run! The last 1.7 miles quickly descends Zumbach Road back to Helvetia.
The 2 Mile Walk starts immediately behind the 10k and follows the same route to the 2 mile mark. The 2 Mile Walk is non-competitive. Dogs on a leash and strollers are welcome.
A portion of the proceeds from this race go to benefit the Helvetia Community Fair Association.
In coordination with the Blackwater Canyon Half Marathon, we’re continuing the Black-Hel Double! This is a two part racing event. First complete a downhill half marathon on the Blackwater Canyon Trail from Thomas to Parsons, WV on Saturday. Then travel to Helvetia on Sunday and finish the 10k Mountain Run. Finishers of both races receive a special hat with the Black-Hel Double logo. Awards will be given out at the conclusion of the Helvetia 10 Mountain Run. No additional purchase necessary.
