The challenge associated with the renowned tough hills of Gozo are certainly rewarded with a course that passes through the most astonishing sights that the island’s landscape and its villages uniquely offer.

The Gozo Half Marathon was organised for the first time in 1977, marking it the first ever marathon held on the Maltese islands. The Marathon knows its origins thanks to Fr. Anthony Refalo, who had derived such an idea from similar activities during his stay in Rome. Today, the Gozo Half Marathon is successfully coordinated by a group of young youths emanating from the Xaghra Youth Centre.

In 1977, the Marathon was organised for only 35 participants, a number which has seen a drastic raise over the years. From what was perceived to be as a local initiative, today this event caters for individuals coming from every corner of the Maltese islands and even from overseas. Proof of this are the number of testimonials that have participated throughout the years.

It is of importance to note that this point-to-point race takes the participants through the scenic natural countryside Gozo is known for. Passing through seven localities, athletes can enjoy the unique landmarks the sister-island has to offer. Beginning from the village of Xaghra, home to the historic Ggantija temples and marvellous Ramla bay the trek makes it way through Victoria, Sannat, Xewkija, Ghajsielem, Qala, Nadur and ends up again in the Xaghra Square.
