RUNNERS, GET READY TO BLAST OFF! In partnership with Space Florida, the annual American Cancer Society Gateway to Space 5K & 10K will take place on the iconic Shuttle Landing Facility. Join us on the runway with views of the VAB in the distance and keep your eyes open on the course for your chance to see landing marks from the shuttles of our past. Runners are encouraged to dress up as their favorite astronaut or space character! Random prizes will be given to our favorite “out of this world” participants! Registration will be capped for this one of a kind event so don’t hesitate, register NOW!
Both races will start at the same time. The 5K Runners will turn around at approximately 1.55 miles and the 10K runners will turn around at approximately 3.1 miles. You will be able to see a couple plaques along the runway where the last flights came to a complete stop. The finisher medals are sure to be out of this world!
You must be a US citizen, no green card holders, as you will be entering a US military base and restrictions apply. Participants MUST be over the age of 13. By registering for this race, you are giving your consent to a federal background check. ONLY registered participants will be allowed to board the buses out to the SLF, NO spectators. Please arrive with your ID and running attire, any bags or personal belongings may be subject to search. If the race does not sell out, registration will close five days prior to the race, NO late registrations allowed.

Easy, flat, fast run on the Space Shuttle landing strip, which is still in use, and is the longest runway in the world. Support is super and over all a lot of fun. Four events are going on at the same time (10K run/walk) (5K run/walk), but the runway is so wide there are no “traffic jams” at all. Do this run if you can!

Get to feel part of the former Space Shuttle program by running on the Space Shuttle landing runway. It’s fast, flat, and well supported by the Running Zone of Melbourne FL. Lots of walkers and 1st time runners, but lots of room to maneuver. Everyone has fun! Highly recommend for everyone, but especially local Florida runners.

This was a truly unique experience, a race on the historic shuttle landing runway. You have to be a US citizen to participate. A few days prior to the event we found out about the packet pick up. I don’t really see this as a glitch, especially since the event itself was absolutely wonderful. This was only the 3rd race at that location benefitting the American Cancer Society. Great cause, great location and the weather cooperated as well. There was a moist, cool mist which made the run on an exposed surface comfortable and pleasant. Afterwards all finishers got an absolutely amazing medal with a rocket, a satellite in space, the moon and stars. The words “Gateway to Space” slightly glow in the dark. All in all it was a fantastic, out of this world experience.

You won’t find another venue like this; running on the shuttle landing strip. We could have used a little more info before the race, but race day itself was flawlessly produced. Times were quickly posted on line the same day, and a large number of free photographs were posted within a couple of days. The logistics of moving a large number of runners around the Kennedy Space Center was smoothly accomplished with comfortable buses. Overall a great experience. Looking forward to next year.
