Gabriella’s Smile Foundation is hosting their annual 5k Cupcake Run presented by Community First Health Plans. This is a family friendly event for everyone and kids ages 0-14 can register as official participants.
MORE THAN JUST A RACE The 5K Cupcake Run is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year. Each year we encourage participants to fundraise $100 for Gabriella’s Smile Foundation. This allows us to provide financial assistance as well as free support for pediatric cancer families facing the stress and impact of a cancer diagnosis. A portion of the funds raised will go towards pediatric brain cancer research.
Gabriella’s 5K Cupcake Run and Gabriella’s Smile Foundation is named after Gabriella Elise Torres, who was 5 when she battled Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a terminal form of brain cancer. She died just 8 days after her 6th birthday on November 7, 2015. Gabriella’s 5K Cupcake Run is the first of its kind here in the San Antonio community for Brain Tumor Awareness Month, which is in May. It’s the first 5K dedicated exclusively to raising awareness for DIPG and pediatric brain cancer in our community.

The race was heavily promoted, and communication was terrific in regards to the threatening weather. Everything else was great including the cupcakes at the end of the race. However, I am a bit disappointed with the race itself. When they announced it was going to start at 9 AM instead of 8:30 due to lightning, I was like okay…then I waited until 8:45 AM to get out of the car to line up, thinking it’s going to begin promptly at 9; then all of a sudden, the race started at 8:50. What the hell? I didn’t appreciate it. Nobody led the course throughout; the front runners had to figure it out themselves; after mile 2, there were no cones at all at the turn, making it pretty easy to keep running straight through by mistake. Also, what I don’t approve is that there were cops at the beginning of the race but none to direct traffic along Lookout Road; some of the automobiles were driving too fast, being disrespectful to the participants and putting them in harm’s way. I’ll gladly run the race again next year, but they need to implement traffic control big time.
