The Frosty Fat Sass is a trail race for runners who love the cold (or runners who hate the cold but need to sign-up for an event because they need the accountability to keep running through the winter) and are ready for a physical and mental challenge! Runners can sign-up for a 5k, 3 hours or 6 hours. The 5K loop starts and finishes at the Turtleback Rock Picnic Area off of Walker Road in West Orange, NJ at the South Mountain Reservation. Funds raised at this trail party will be donated to the South Mountain Conservancy, an awesome local non-profit that preserves the South Mountain Reservation and provides great educational and recreational opportunities for the community! We have raised over $10,000 for the Conservancy since we started up in 2018! (Because this event is a fundraiser, we will NOT OFFER REFUNDS OR DEFFERALS. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT BEFORE YOU REGISTER, THANK YOU!)
This is a runner, walker, hiker friendly event. For the 3 hour and 6 hour events, if the timer ends before you complete the loop, the loop does not count.
This is a self-supported fat-ass event! No finishers’ swag, no aid stations and no whining (unless you don’t see Sasquatch, then you can whine a little). To be included in the final results on Ultra Sign Up, runners/hikers need to record their loops on the loop board and 5k-ers need to write their finish time on the clipboard.
There are portapottys at the start/finish area. Start on the Hillspur trail. When the trail splits, stay left to continue onto Longwood Trail. Turn right onto Reservoir Road Trail; the Girl Scout Camp will be on your left (if you run through the camp or if you hit a road, you missed the turn!). At the bottom of the mountain, follow the orange trail markers to make a right onto Reservoir Trail. At the first split, keep left to stay on Reservoir Trail. Reservoir Trail will turn into the white-dot Zoo Loop Trail. After the trail becomes a single track, turn right onto connector trail (marked by orange duct tape). Take this all the way up to the parking lot, turn right to stay on the grass (the portapottys will be on your left) back to the start/finish. There’s 289 ft of gain.
