The race takes place on a Thursday evening to kick off the town of Freeland’s all-weekend-long Walleye Festival. Last year I was driving home from work as the race was going on, but this year I was able to get off a bit earlier and participate. Signing up as a game-time decision cost a few extra bucks, but it worked out for me. I worked my way into the lead and held out for a win and a personal best–and free entry to next year’s race! The finisher’s medal is nice and the plaque given to the top 3 finishers is full color and is the first of it’s kind on my shelf :-). One of the sponsors was a local pizza place, so dinner planning was easy across the finish line.
In the past year, Freeland has added a brand new rail trail next to the main road through town. The course was completely changed to incorporate this new surface entirely for the 5K and a significant portion for the 10K. This is much nicer than the potholes/gravel of the country roads used in previous years. The start and finish is at the Freeland SportsZone, a place with plenty of parking.
