The Fountainhead Half Marathon and 10K courses are absolutely tough and they are absolutely beautiful. Fountainhead Regional Park, in Fairfax County, VA, is only 30 minutes outside of Washington D.C. and has an extremely remote feel for being so close to a major metropolitan area. The half marathon(ish) course includes a 6-mile long stretch of the Bull-Run Occoquan Trail (BROT) from Fountainhead to Bull Run Marina as well as three seldom used side trails along the BROT. The 10K(ish) course uses a shorter section of the BROT and one of the side trails. Yes, it’s the one with the really epic climb!
Course Length: 13.1 miles (HM) and 6.8 miles (10K++)
Our charity partner for this event is Homestretch. If you are able, please consider making a donation to this amazing organization during registration.
Fountainhead Regional Park is situated along the banks of the Occoquan Reservoir in Western Fairfax County in Northern Virginia. The 10K and half marathon race courses are beautiful and challenging consisting mostly of hiking trails (including the Bull Run Occoquan Trail), horse trails, and old dirt roads. This course is epic! Competitors will run over rocks and roots, through several shallow streams, and up (and down) some quad burning hills.

It is a good race. Well organized, good swag, good post race food. The course is cool with little bridges to cross. There was one mean as hell horsefly that wouldn’t leave me alone. The only bad thing is the time of year is rough. it was the first hot summer day we had had for the year and I was hurting. And then the course according to my garmin was a mile over the half distance. But maybe I got lost and then found it again.
Hills! Roots! Creek Crossings! Fun!
