Explore the Falls of Rough Resort on the Rough River near the Green Mansion Farm and Rough River Dam. The 13.2-mile Falls 100 trail loop is sure to get your heart pumping as you climb to an elevation with breathtaking views of the Rough River and surrounding valley. Run across a 200-year-old bridge spanning the Falls of Rough with remnants of a 190-year-old mill.
Built in the early 1800s, the Green Farm Mansion was the centerpiece of the Green Farm at Falls of Rough during the community’s era of grandeur in the 1800s and early 1900s. However, the mansion’s demise in the last 40 years left many wondering if the historic structure would ever be brought back to its original splendor. “Restoring the mansion was one of our top priorities when we came here,” says Green Farm Owner Sam Ware. “It’s an amazing structure and deserves to be restored and enjoyed by everyone.” That enjoyment has come in the form of a 9-bedroom bed and breakfast. The facility is furnished with antiques and all the structural fixtures in the mansion have been restored to their authentic state. US Congressman Willis Green, who served in the US House of Representatives for three consecutive terms in the 1840s, built the famed structure. Green was a close friend of Henry Clay and helped manage Clay’s presidential campaign. Green’s son Lafayette and wife Ella expanded the mansion to its current size. Stories of spirited evening dinners and family gatherings highlight the charm of the mansion during Lafayette and Ella’s tenure. Their four siblings continued with the evening tradition as dinner was served by uniformed attendants with fine china displayed on the table. Austrian and Baroque style furnishings accent the interior of the mansion. Each bedroom has been filled with elaborate mahogany Victorian beds that you must see to believe. Elite rugs compliment the now refurbished hardwood floors and the grand staircase now sparkles from top to bottom, step by step.

The Kentucky Race Management team sets up one of the most well organized and enjoyable ultra experiences. The course is perfectly marked, the volunteers and organizers go beyond expectations to help runners at every stage of the event, and the location itself has great scenery and weather during the time of year it takes place. Having run this as my first ultra event last year, I was happy to come back for another try, and look forward to more races at the The Falls. The aid station food has everything you might want, the gear/awards are high quality, and the event is photographed throughout too. Also, the course is challenging but rewarding, and continues to be updated every year with improvements, so it should only get better!

One of my favorites! This race was very well organized. The course was incredibly well marked. I ran the nighttime half marathon and had no trouble staying on course even when I couldn’t see any other runners. The aid stations were great—they even fixed me a hot quesadilla at the finish line! (One of many options) The course is very challenging, but doable. Make sure you have trail worthy shoes.

This is a race where you truly feel like you are at home with friends and family. What a wonderful atmosphere! Make sure to be physically and mentally ready to battle this course. It is one the tougher ones out there, without a doubt. Aid stations, volunteers, other crew and most certainly the RD’s are there from before the start, during and after to see you succeed.

This was a great race! My first 50-miler and my goal was to complete it, and the hills and terrain gave me everything I could have hoped for in terms of a challenge. The aid stations were great, the volunteers and race management were great, and the local community was great. I will be back next year for sure, hopefully for a faster finish!

Great Race! Challenging, fun and Very well organized. The course markings were placed perfectly and easy to follow. The aid stations were stocked with anything you needed and the volunteers were quick and friendly. I really appreciated all of the extra effort that went into setting up the course, like the randomly placed signs along the course with motivational quotes. They always seemed to be in the right place at the right time.

Those who put on this race go to great lengths to make sure you will have a memorable experience. They genuinely care about their runners! They keep you well informed, and remind you to have fun while you’re out there really challenging yourself on the hills of Kentucky. Loved this run; will definitely be a repeat runner! Be prepared to climb and descend a lot, probably deal with mud, and whatever December in KY has in store. Bring a good attitude, and you won’t be let down.

This trail was certainly challenging but was advertised as such! First time 50 miler, i will likely be back next year. Muddy with some decent size hills but manageable and fun. Trekking poles were helpful. The loop aspect was nice to see family, clean up etc. Very aid back with awesome volunteers and race directors! Stayed at Rough River State Park with clean cabins and dog friendly.

13 mile loop, aid at 8 miles and 0/13 with two water drops as well.
COVID-19 precautions in place and everyone seemed to be complying.
A lot of climbing but no long (mountain type) climbs.
Cold, 23 F at start and 27 F when I finished the 50 miler but many runners ran in shorts. No wind or rain or it would have been very cold.
I started in 100 miler but was undertrained for this course and was happy with a 50 mile finish.

This was my first ultra-marathon and it was a stellar experience. It had treacherous climbs, fast downhills, wooded landscapes, and beautiful views. I was hesitant about this having loops BUT ended up preferring them as I was able to re-equip myself each time I started a new one. On my final loop, I soaked in the experience and didn’t want it to end, unlike previous road marathons.
If you are looking to debut in an ultra or seeking a new challenging race, I highly recommend this one. A+ experience!
Recommendation:
– Different bibs for each race

The course is very muddy at parts (and depending on weather has been muddier in prior year) with a lot of challenging inclines and declines. The race management is excellent and the smaller number of runners participating make this a very personal and rewarding course. The aid stations, help with drop bags, available water and bathrooms, and overall event were excellent and I look forward to running the next one here.
