Like a lot of races, the Fall Back Blast began ten years ago simply out of the selfish idea that we needed another race to train for. This led to a test run the year before the first official race, back in 2013; we called it the “Half Blast” and Chippewa Valley Trail Runners legends Steve Wood, Matt Evans, Pam Ogden, and Laura Plummer helped kick it off.
CORBA made the announcement of this free “Half Blast” half marathon event only a week prior to its run, and we had almost 40 people show up! It was then that we knew we had a winning event on our hands… Plus an extra hour of sleep ;).
Over the years, the event has grown into the trail running festival it is today. Along with distances ranging from a 5K to a 50K, racers and spectators enjoy annual traditions like bonfires near the aid stations, hot coffee and cider, free chili provided by volunteers, a legit pancake breakfast (for runners!) at the west side aid station, music, and local vendors. The event grows every year with new traditions! For the second year in a row, Blue Ox Running (Eau Claire’s local running store) has donated raffle items for racers and volunteers to win on race day.
The Venue
Lowes Creek County Park, located within the city of Eau Claire, WI, offers twisty wooded singletrack, quick climbs and fast sections.
At Lowes Creek you will find a variety of trails for every level of mountain biker or runner, from beginner to advanced. The trails include approximately 5 miles of the double-track cross country ski system and over 13 miles of technical/challenging narrow single track.
The single track trails take the rider/runner to all four corners of the park by winding through pine tree forests, crossing creek beds, and cruising along ridge lines.
All of the trails at Lowes Creek are multi-use and appeal to runners, walkers, and mountain bikers. Single track trails are open in the winter and groomed for fat bikes and snowshoers.

You can choose 1, 2, 3, or 4 loops of 12.5km each. I did the 25k and it was a wonderful experience. All of the volunteers were so nice and the aid stations are amazing! Whether you need salty foods, sugary foods, or quesadillas, the aid stations have you covered. Beautiful fall race.
