I ran this race the year that they did it in June. I can not recommend doing this race in June :o) However it appears that it normally is in April, which seems much more pleasant.
Not much to say about the expo. It was basically a packet pick up in a running store. No complaints, but very simple.
I decided to scope out the course a little before I ran it and knew quickly where the “fun” was going to be. More on that later.
The pre-race communication was solid and I was very clear on where I was going and when. Parking was simple on race morning and there was plenty of room to warm up and stretch. The announcements were plenty loud and there was even sufficient space to line up for the race.
After launch you quickly come to a steep downhill. This is a clue about what you shall face when you return. This is an out and back course and therefore you need to run back up that hill again. In mile 12….. If this hill isn’t already making you reconsider your life choices, I can tell you that it is steep enough that there is a separate set of timing mats just for the ascent back up, and a prize for the fastest to do it. You need to leave gas in the tank for this hill or suffer the consequences. The remainder of the course is rolling hills through neighbourhoods and a park. It is actually kind of pretty. But…. again….. Not in June heat.
The finish line and festivities are solid. The beer from Foothills was tasty. The music entertaining and there were lots of awards.
I am not sure how all this looks in April, but even in the hot hot heat I was very pleasantly surprised by this race. I don’t know that I would pick it over Charlotte for those trying to do their 50 States, but certainly it is not a poor choice.
Really Great Local Race
