The Chennai Marathon is the largest sporting event in Chennai and second largest in India. The event is organised by Chennai Runners, a not-for-profit organisation run by passionate runners cum volunteers since 2006. It is one of the few running events in the country that is entirely organised by the running community. Originally started as the ECR Run, it was one where participants would begin from a resort on East Coast Road (ECR) and run for about 5 or 10 km, turn back and then post run, convene for breakfast at the resort. There were no more than 25 runners on the first ECR run. The quarterly ECR Run transformed into an annual signature event in 2010.

The Chennai Marathon has four race categories namely, 10 Km, Half Marathon (21.097 Km), the 20 miler and Full Marathon (42.195 Km). The Perfect 20 Miler (32.186 Km) category was introduced during SPCM 2019. SPCM is usually held on the first Sunday of January every year. The race will be held at the prestigious Madras Motor Race Track at Irungaatukottai, Kancheepuram District.
