The Cellcom Green Bay Marathon is an annual marathon that takes place in the streets of Green Bay, with all events making their way through the iconic Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers. If you’re not quite ready for 26.2 miles, there are other events to choose from. There is a half marathon, a marathon and half marathon relay and a 5K run.
The Cellcom Green Bay Marathon course is considered to be fast and flat, by race industry comparisons. The marathon will leave the stadium district and continue through Ashwaubenon. Once runners arrive back in the stadium district they will make their way to the players tunnel and inside historic Lambeau Field to complete a lap around the field before finishing in the shadows of the stadium.
The marathon is a Boston Marathon qualifier, which means the event is sanctioned by USA Track & Field and the course is certified. The race typically takes place the third weekend in May, and the average temperature in Green Bay that time of year ranges from a low of 45 degrees Fahrenheit to a high of 67 degrees Fahrenheit.

I went to the race not knowing what to expect and just going with my training and what the website stated. Flat course- most of it is through suburban neighborhoods along the streets. There is a point where you go onto the highway for a bit, but there is also some flat trails. The event was well organized and the hotel that I chose was within a couple of blocks from the starting/ finish line. Really neat to see Lambeau Field (the football stadium) from the outside (mile 25) then go in and finish around the field. I am glad that I ran this race

The crowd support was great overall, you never went more than a minute without a group of people cheering you on. I loved the girls who had marathon trivia, that was a nice touch! Lots of goos and food options. Tiny expo but it’s the last time this race is happening. Running through Lambeau Field was cool 🙂

This is a well done, veteran race and crew. Green Bay has the fame because of the Packers, but the local race production does a good job not resting on the name. (the only thing they can’t control is the weather). It’s well organized, well laid out and a good course through Green Bay, letting you se the entire town at a marathon pace. Recommended.

Easy travel, good airport and hotel choices adjacent to the race start and finish. No expo – just a packet pickup in a bar in the area. Swag was a shirt and water bottle. Shuttle buses were plentiful and start time was reasonable. Here’s where it was bad – the course was so boring. We ran by every single house in Green Bay – but at mile 12 you see Lambeau Field approaching! Running around the entire inside of the stadium was amazing! I was disappointed in the pictures – the photo spot did not do the stadium or the finish line justice. Plenty of water stops and volunteer support. The medal was ugly and after race food was down the street from the finish at a bar. Not sure if I would do it again but glad I did it once.

I was really disappointed with the decision to cancel the full. I woke up to a text saying that due to flooding on the course, the marathon was canceled but I had the option of running the full. The “flooding” was near my hotel which was near the end of the race. There was maybe 50 meters of water on the trail by the river when I went out for my warm up before the half. In my opinion, runners could have been directed around the water. When I got back to my hotel, the flooding had receded and wouldn’t have impacted the race. I was looking forward to racing Green Bay to add it as another state on my 50 state marathon quest. The half was run through neighborhoods and a part went around Lambeau Field. Running through the stadium was neat, but the rest of the course wasn’t particularly scenic or memorable. I know that it is a tough decision to cancel any race, but in my opinion, the organizers made the wrong call. As a final kick-in-the-pants, when I finished the half, the announcer mispronounced my name which summed up my race experience.

This had been my first marathon ever back in 2009 and running through Lambeau was definitely worth it. The course has changed since then, but the course offers a lot of variety….riverside, residential, industrial….but running through the tunnel at the end onto the field makes every mile worth it!! Tailgate party at finish line!! I have done several times now so the excitement is not the same, but a great event and expo and a must do for any Packer Backers.

Packet pick up was fairly smooth although I had to ask around to find exactly where the packets were – the expo was on the main level but packets were on the 3rd level. I didn’t see signs but there were enough other runners around to ask and find my way. The shuttle for my hotel was disappointing. I and another runner were waiting by the front of the Bay Motel as instructed on the shuttle info, wondering where the shuttle was, only to see it pull off of a side street (not visible from the front of the hotel) and leave us behind. Luckily we weren’t too far from the start (a little over a mile), but we had to walk to the start line. Not a good way to start the day! More specific info is needed on the shuttle pick up info (street name would have been helpful!) The staging area at the start was well organized, space was available for warm up, Lambeau field atrium was open for restrooms and stretching and corral start was nice even with a smaller field. Least crowded start I’ve ever experienced which I appreciate. The race itself I found to be scenically a bit boring – many residential neighborhoods. No fault of the race but there was a strong N wind along the river stretch for 7 straight miles which took a lot out of me. What I did not like were all of the turns (there were so many, some of which were tight and one right after another) and several places where you had to cross curbs with no ramps. Also a few railroad crossings. I guess the flatness of the course makes up for these things though.

If your a NFL fan this race is for you! You get to run around the old Packer stadium across the river and Lambeau field with going down where the players walk in from. The race was easy and ran with the 5:30 pace group because I had a right sprained ankle from previous weeks. It was perfect for me which was a run/walk “Run two minutes and 30 seconds; then walk 40 seconds.” The 2 leaders were amazing and stayed with us the whole time. Go Pack Go!

Overall Rating: Ok, it was just a marathon.
Course Difficulty: A few small hills, and a couple of rises for bridges, but a fairly easy course.
Course Scenery: Neighborhoods and industrial areas…blah.
Race Production: It was fine-ish. I had to pay and extra $50 for race day picket pickup and couldn’t get anyone to give any real details. I arrived at 5am race morning to try and sort it out, but no one was around. At 6am (race started at 7) a random volunteer happened to walk by and those of us waiting sweet talked her into helping us…who knows if the person who was actually supposed to be there was going to show up…dumb.
Anyway, on the course, support was good, volunteers were kind, and if you’re a Packer’s fan (which I’m really not), you get to run a lap around Lambeau Field.
Race Swag: Good. I didn’t love the medal (it was the third piece of a three part), but it’s fine.
My Performance: Really sore after Fargo the day before, so I just took it easy…still had a 9 hour drive and back to work at 6:30 Monday morning.
Just know that this is a race seems to be about making money, not making runners love it. I needed a check mark by WI and this one fit the schedule. All said and done this very average race cost me $165 for entry, with no extras included…a far cry from the outstanding $35 race in Ohio.
If you’re schedule allows and you’re only running one in WI, I would look elsewhere.
Should try at least once.

This was my first road marathon. The course was pretty flat and scenic. Starting off at Lambeau was pretty awesome. Finishing at Lambeau…I felt like it was a cluster. The finish was probably what formed most of my opinions on this race. Obviously the finish is one of the last things I remember. Too many people trying to file through the tunnel, out on to the field, and back out the tunnel. Walkers from the half didn’t move over for the runner of the full. I will do this again in hopes of changing my view, and also for the 2nd of a series of 3 medals. Being in Lambeau was definitely a rush though! Race shirts were mediocre. They offer a nice fit but gold print on a maroon shirt doesn’t work well. You can’t read anything on it.
