The new course was much better than I expected.. The first half was really picturesque taking in the iconic Canberra areas such as Parliment House, the High Court and National Gallery. then through the Embassy belt to the shores of Lake Burley Griffin. After crossing Commonwealth Bridge at kilometre 24 we headed west along Parks way into an extremely strong head wind before a turn round and tracking back to Kings bridge with a tale wind for the final kilometres to the finish on the lawns in front of old parliament house

This was my third Australian half marathon, and one to tick off the list of covering every Australian state and territory.

The half- marathon is one of four events held at the Australian Running Festival… as the country’s capital I guess they get to call it that.

The expo is non-existant… one temporary shop in a park selling race t-shirts and a few bits and pieces of running gear.

The course itself is largely flat. It starts our making a loop of Australia’s parliament building, then heads towards the very pretty artificial lake Burley Griffin. Most of the course is reasonably scenic except for the roughly five or so kilometre out and back along a freeway.

The course starts and finishes at Australia’s Old Parliament House.

Looking for a fun marathon in Australia? Look no further than Australia’s capital city of Canberra. The Canberra Marathon’s course was recently revamped and now takes runners along a scenic journey around the lake at the center of the city (Lake Burley Griffin). You start and finish in a park in front of Australia’s Parliament building, and it’s a well-organized event. The year I ran it (2014) was perfect weather for running… sunny, no wind, and temps in the 50’s F. Despite being mostly along the lake, there are quite a few rolling hills that can really take a toll on your legs. Ideally, there would be a few more aid stations along the course, too, but overall it’s a great race and a nice chance to see the nation’s capital.
