This is a fast point-to-point course in Southern Oregon. If you’re looking for a good course to chase a PR or BQ in the Pacific Northwest, this could be a good option. It’s net downhill on a moderately wide bike path from Ashland to Medford. The only caveat for the course’s speed and difficulty is a slight uphill finish for the last 3 miles but it is still a very quick course, all things considered. Certain aspects of the race were well-organized – the shuttle to the start line was smooth and efficient, the bib pick up and finish line festival was lively and fun, and the course was well marked with mile markers (except for a misplaced Mile 10 marker on the half marathon course). The path can get a bit crowded at times since there are points where people are going both directions but since the race isn’t huge, this generally isn’t a big deal. The conditions were also ideal (crisp and cool, no wind) and the course was pretty scenic. However, there were two significant logistical issues. First, there were only 3 portapotties at the half-marathon start for 150+ runners. Second, there were supposed to be aid stations every 2-3 miles, especially since the half and full marathon shared a course. Unfortunately, the first aid station was not set up when the half marathon reached it and after that first aid station, there was not a single other aid station for the rest of the race (and just one first aid station around mile 8 or 9), which is something I’ve never experienced before. This race was fast and good in many aspects (I love the large prize purse and the fast fields it attracted) but I would not do the race again solely because the lack of aid stations is unfortunately a deal-breaker, especially if you are doing the marathon.

This race was a fast and flat race in scenic rural Oregon with a very supportive crowd and race director. The course was extremely flat, as advertised. The race director was very excited for all runners and I recommend this as a good race for a first-time runner, as you will be encouraged by many volunteers and other runners. Logistics were simple. Only critiques would be to make the mile marker signs larger (it was very hard to see them coming up) and improve the aid stations a bit (make the drinks clearer or ask the volunteers to hand them out rather than just place on a table). Everyone was super kind and it is a fun race to do!

This race is a well-organized half-marathon in Golden Gate Park. The course was fairly flat for the first 4-5 miles (some light rolling hills) but the long gradual downhill from Mile 5-7 was very helpful. The last 6 miles along the Great Highway were very flat, which was nice for the second part of the race. Only tough part of the whole race was the uphill finish for the last 400 meters or so. Make sure you save some energy for it. Mile markers were clear (except for Mile 2, which no one saw). Aid stations were sufficient but it would have been nicer to have better differentiation between water and electrolytes and to have each option at every aid station. Pre-race parking and transportation was very smooth, especially for a city race. Scenery in Golden Gate Park and along the ocean was also beautiful. The website was pretty confusing and information was hard to find pre-race but eventually I got all the info I needed. Suggested improvements would be an improved website, slightly more organized aid stations, and making sure each mile marker is very clear. Other than that, it was a great race. The course was fast and enjoyable and I would do it again and recommend to others.

This race was an excellent one if you’d like to break a personal record in the marathon. You can tell it is organized by runners, for runners. Everything from the website to the bus shuttles to the course mile markers are geared to helping you run your best. The scenery is not the best, as you just go through suburban Sacramento, but it is a fast downhill course with sufficient aid stations, lots of quality runners, and a fun finish at the Capitol. I think it’s the best race on the West Coast for a fall marathon, especially if you want to run a fast time, and I plan to run it multiple times. My only caveat is to be careful to not go too fast in the first half. Although it’s downhill, the rolling hills in the first half can beat up your legs if you go out too fast so be conservative in the first half of the race to take advantage of the flat last 6 miles.

This race was the best-organized race that I’ve ever done. Everything from the registration policy to the race website to the aid stations was thoughtful and runner-friendly. The course was well-marked and even with challenges (streetcar routes, etc), the race had a plan to make sure no runners ever had to stop at a light or for a train crossing with adequate pre-race planning and alternative routes. It was very good. The aid stations were generous and well-organized, the mile markers were clear, and the route gave you a great tour of Portland. The only downside to this race is that the course is a bit challenging so I wouldn’t expect a flat, easy race. There are quite a few hills so I would go with a bit more conservative pace (I aimed for 2-3 minutes slower than my goal marathon time for a flat course). Other than a challenging course, I have no critiques and really appreciated all the thoughtful work that went into the race. Highly recommend!!
