If you are looking for net downhill race that won’t blow out your quads, this is it. This is my second year running M2B, and my second BQ. I find the race size manageable, which means you won’t find yourself spending the first 5 miles dodging slower runners. I’ve read a few complaints that this race has limited course support, but it seemed like there was a water stop at least every mile to me. With reasonable temps, you don’t need to stop every mile anyway. I like the early start (6 am) so that you can finish before the sun gets too high. Yes, when you get to mile 23 you do have a slight uphill, but it’s only bad if you let it get to your head. I do, however, wish that the race finished closer to the Ventura Pier, as that last mile along the beach does seem like forever. One small complaint about the race swag- the shirts seem to get larger every year, and they don’t carry women’s XS. I’ll never wear the race shirt because even the small is like a dress on me, which is disappointing.

The full marathon has a number of out and backs in the same general area. If you aren’t feeling great at around mile 16, it’s SO tempting to quit knowing the finish line is only a mile away at that point. Much prefer single loop courses or point to point. Generally flat though, and the running surface is good. Decent number of aid stations on the part of the course shared with the half. Once you move to the beach path though, the aid stations are spread much further apart.
The 2017 course appeared to be a bit long- this was the consensus among several runners. Compared maps from last years runners to my own, and the turnaround near mile 20 appears to have been further out. Could have cost me a BQ had I stayed on my goal pace.

The point to point course is nice but can be mildly challenging with the roller coaster hills and the blazing sun in spots. Generally great crowd support and cheer stations along the way. The beginning is often a bit of a bottleneck and they require you to be in corrals
about 30 min early,
with no access
to bathrooms. Would be nice if the lines the corrals with portapottys. Transportation options are interesting. It can be a challenge for your family members to get to the finish unless they plan to spend all morning there waiting. Perhaps the expo line will help with this for future races.
