This year was the first time I had run the race since 2007 (eighth time overall), and the event is even better than it was when I ran it back then. Very, very well organized — the expo is very easy to navigate and race day logistics are almost flawless. The course is flat and very, very fast. Overall it’s one of the best half marathons in the US and should be on a lot of bucket lists.

The course is crazy flat and fast, there are absolutely no “hills” to speak of, with the only elevation changes coming from twice going over a bridge and a little rise at mile 7. Stay at the Alluvian hotel and you only have a two-block walk to both the start and the finish — where they have free beer! The town of Greenwood is small and some parts of it are old, but there are a few nice sights to see, especially along the historic Grand Avenue. Not much crowd support but the locals are proud of the race and do come out to show encouragement to the runners.

The course winds through an office park and isn’t the most scenic in the world, but it it flat (one uphill just past the mile) and a total PR course! Swag was decent, a nice t-shirt and a cool pint glass. You can never have enough of those! Start/finish area was nice and a great place to be social, and free beer inside the warm California Pizza Kitchen! About 500 people combined ran the 5K and 10K, so not so big to be crowded but big enough to always have people to race with.

Here in Chicago it’s tough to find races once December rolls around, and most of the ones you find are pretty small. Still, this one is a very good one all things considered. The course is fully enclosed on the Schaumburg Golf Club course, and the race route follows the cart paths, and with the help of volunteers is pretty easy to follow. It’s definitely a PR-type course, very flat with a bit of a hill the final 200 meters to the finish. It only had about 200 runners this year, but they serve free beer and chili at the end.

This was a small-ish race but a lot of fun. Pretty low key in terms of swag and only two water stops on the course. The course itself was very interesting, it started and finished on a grass horse track, and the rest of the course was crushed limestone. Very beautiful scenery through the Danada Forest Preserve. The course is a challenge with a big downhill at about 1 1/2 miles, then after a quick turnaround you have to run up the steep hill. Makes you work a little bit!

Night races have been popping up all over the Chicago area, and this is one of the better ones. The race starts in Lincoln Park and follows the Lakefront Path. The views as the sun is going down in the west and the boats are out on Lake Michigan are stunning. They added a post-race party this year that has some potential. About the only thing I could say negative about this race is that it’s getting a little big and the path is pretty crowded, so it’s best to go into this one as more of a relaxed run than a PR attempt.

The Summer Sunset 5K is a well-organized event that is organized by runners, for runners. The course is relatively flat and finishes on the Geneva High School track. It usually has a pretty fast field (the 2014 winner ran 15:31) and is pretty popular with high school runners as they look to knock the rust off of a summer of training. The event also has a Youth Mile and a short dash for the younger kids.

I'm biased because I live here, but it's an amazing race, well organized and with plenty of fan support. And you can't beat the view of a world-class skyline! MORE

I didn’t have my best day there back in 2003, but it was still a great experience. Things were smooth at the expo and I felt the execution of the race went off without a hitch. One warning…be ready for some hills! While I know the course has changed since I ran there I was not prepared for the kind of hills they have in LA. If I ever run it again for sure hill training will be a big part of my prep.
