Easy fast and flat, kind of boring

I live in the Seattle area, so this was easy for me to get to, and I’d run many parts of the actual course before, so I knew it would be pretty easy. My main complain is that the course was actually kind of boring. It’s probably because I already know the area. It’s pretty, and if it hadn’t been overcast (unlikely in our area most of the year), the mountains would have been gorgeous. But with the clouds, it was just sort of so-so. I also didn’t enjoy being the last person on the course (okay, second to last, but I think she DNFed!), even though I think I did a PR. I’m slow, but man, I felt really slow that day! More people, and more walkers (or runners who also walk) would have been nice! Also, there were no porty potties the last 2.5 (maybe 3?) miles! I had to go potty in the woods (there weren’t very many trees that fit the bill, either, yikes!).

I really enjoyed that it was a pretty small number of people (though not too small). There was a definite sense of camaraderie, especially since i was doing this race with Team Challenge. I really enjoyed the local involvement with people holding signs and folks really getting into the spirit. The heat was pretty brutal, but I had just been in the Midwest in July, so it wasn’t overwhelming to me, like it was to some of my friends. The main complaint I had about this race was the road surface. It was awful. Some places, it was great, but other parts it was deteriorating as if it had been through a few rough winters with salt in the Upper Midwest. Hard to believe for a place that doesn’t get a ton of precipitation or freezing. And some of the 90 degree bends in the road were surprisingly steeply banked and I’m surprised I didn’t injure myself. Still, the scenery was gorgeous and I’d love to go back.
