This is a beautiful course in the middle of wine country. The early March date allowed for cooler temperatures despite some rain. The race was very well-organized with aid stations every 2 miles, transportation was well-timed, and the expo / finish area were great. They had a variety of pace groups, and I credit the pace group for pushing me to get my PR. I loved that there was wine / beer tasting at the expo, but I was disappointed that there wasn’t wine or beer in the post-race finishers’ area. My only other complaint was on the gear. The bag they gave to participants was great quality, but the participant shirt was very poor quality. After the race, I wanted to buy some merchandise, but the selection was very slim by the time I got there shortly after I finished. I was still able to buy something that I liked to remember the race, but the selection was very limited.

As far as the course, I would rate it as a 2 out of 5 on a difficulty scale. It is a point-to-point race that begins in Calistoga and ends in Napa. Overall, it has a negative incline, but there are some hills in the beginning of the race (my GPS said it was 530ft total elevation gain). None of the hills were steep, but many of them were long. Also, as nice as the descent is for running faster, it does make your feet and legs tired faster if you’re not used to a long descent like that. The beautiful scenery, great people to talk to along the way and beautiful course more than made up for any difficulty the course may have had.

I would certainly do this race again, and I hope to do it again next year. I’m excited that they added a half marathon and 5k so that other friends and family can participate if they don’t want to do a full marathon. This would be a great race for first timers, those who love wine, anyone looking for a PR and those who would love a great destination race.

This is a great race for first-timers and elite athletes! The race is very well-organized, the expo is great, and the course is flat and fast. There are plenty of spectators along the way, and you run through many of the unique Indianapolis neighborhoods from downtown to Broad Ripple to Butler to the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The weather is typically in the upper 30s at the start but in the mid-50s by the finish, so perfect weather for racing a marathon. There could be rain or snow, but the past few years have been partly cloudy to mostly sunny.

There are plenty of aid stations and inspirational signs along the way (especially at mile 20). Tip: you or someone else can draw a sign at the expo that will be on display at mile 20 – it’s great to see some motivation when you need it the most.

I highly recommend this race – it’s a great one to do whether you’re local or coming from far away!
