The Flying Pig Marathon is billed as “more than just a marathon because it is. Flying Pig Weekend starts Friday with the expo and a one mile evening race. Saturday has multiple races, including a 10K, 5K, and two kids runs. There’s even a run for dogs Saturday afternoon. The main event, of course, is the full and half marathons on Sunday morning. The course is challenging, but incredible. Start off next to Paul Brown Stadium, then run past Great American Ball Park and cross the river into Northern Kentucky. After a couple of miles, you cross back over the river with a beautiful view of the stadiums and downtown. The course takes through downtown, then up into Eden Park where you’ll get another incredible view of the river. From there, the course makes its way through several Cincinnati suburbs before turning back toward the city. The hardest part of the course mentally is the few miles along Route 50 before settling onto Riverside Drive for the final few miles into the city. The crowd support along the course is fantastic, providing refreshments and entertainment above and beyond what the is provided by the race. Water stops have both water and Gatorade and are large enough that you don’t have to stop to wait for a cup. After the race, the post race party in Smale Riverfront Park is a great place to hang out with your fellow racers to eat and drink while recounting your achievements over the weekend. Whether a first time marathoner or a seasoned veteran, the Flying Pig Marathon should be on your short list of “must run” races.

The course is relatively flat with some rolling hills throughout. No monster climbs, but far from a cakewalk. My only real issue with the race is that even though it was chip timed, they only reported gun times. I started near the back of the pack because I was hanging out with friends prior to the start and wasn’t concerned about gun time. Had I known, I would have started closer to the front. As a result, my official time is 35 seconds slower than my watch time. Several of us have inquired about this and they are looking into it, but be aware of that in the future. UPDATE: The timing company acknowledged the problem with reporting gun time instead of chip time and have fixed the issue.

The course starts and ends in downtown Indianapolis, going past Lucas Oil Stadium and through Monument Circle, though the course outside of downtown was less interesting. It’s almost completely flat, with plenty of aid stations along the way. My only real complaint is that the Gatorade was mixed a little too strong. 🙂

This is a smaller race, without some of the frills of bigger events. Even so, it’s an enjoyable run with enthusiastic volunteers, a relatively flat route, and topped off with a pancake breakfast. It was a cold, wet, gloomy day, but I still enjoyed the race. I’ll do it again next year.

This is one of my favorite races because it was my first 10K and then my first Half Marathon. The course is mostly along the Little Miami Bike Trail, which is nice for a summer run because it’s mostly shaded. Not a very interesting course (a quick loop through downtown, then 12 miles on the bike trail), but there are well-staffed aid stations every couple of miles and a nice after-run gathering in the park.

The event is well run, with great volunteers. Highly recommended for an easy summer Half Marathon or 10K.

This was my first full marathon, and what a great race for a first. The course winds through downtown and into historical districts east of the city, finishing along the Ohio River. The hills are challenging, but not ridiculous. Copious water/aid stations along the course and enthusiastic crowds help keep you going, especially in the final few miles. Can’t wait until next year.
