Be prepared for whatever So FL has to throw at you in Jan. As a resident of Ft Lauderdale, we have a bit more humidity in the winter than other US areas, but this year was a toughy! Dehydration was a real thing and you don’t even realize it.

There is a ton of hype around this race. I have known several people that have run it and loved it, so time for me to try. Living in So FL, I was not able to get enough hill running in to properly train, but it was an awesome race. From mile 5.6 to mile 10 is uphill. Every time we turned a corner, there was another hill to conquer. That being said, the downhill (miles 10 – 12.7) was incredible. Over a min/mile faster than the uphill, not bad for 10 miles into 13. Only downside was getting into your corral (or PigPen as they call them). The access in was jammed, no one could move and spectators just standing there with no business being so close to the corrals. Being the home of P&G and Kroger, the swag was plentiful and a nice collapsible cooler for each runner. If they can figure out the start access, it would be flawless. Be prepared for a long uphill!!

Tough to get into this race but if you can, do it. Well worth the run across a beautiful bridge. It is your only opportunity all year to do this. Though the coordination with state and local authorities shutting down this life-line to Key West is very well orchestrated, after 38 years, you would think packet pickup would be well oiled as well. Please be patient! Most frustrating part of the weekend.

What a small, fun race in mid January. While standing at the Finish Line, I was amazed at the hometowns being announced as runners finished. I believe I heard all 50 states and many foreign countries. It really is a destination race, especially for those tired of the cold! Not a lot of fan support out on the out n back along the shore of the Atlantic, but the scenery makes up for it.

I have run this race every year since it’s first in 2011. The city of Savannah really rolls out the red carpet to the running community. Everyone is on a “runner’s high” throughout the town. The local support while running down Oglethorpe is like running the NYC Marathon. Fans lining the street! It’s always a Sat race, so gives you the chance to enjoy the great cuisine Sat night for a victory dinner.
