The Cowtown 🏆

This is such a well organized race, but I could tell that they were still working out the kinks from last year’s changes due to COVID. To start with, corrals 1 and 2 were grouped together, however, the signage wasn’t very clear. There was a lot of confusion among the corral 2 runners as to where they were supposed to be. Once things got started though, it was the same great race it’s always been. There are some medium difficulty hills, but the scenery is fantastic! The only real problem arose when I tried getting back to my car afterwards. I had parked at the UNT Health Science Center, but it was very difficult getting back since the ongoing race effectively blocked all the direct routes to that parking lot. The staff were equally confused as to how best to reach my car. Parking issues aside, the race was great!

This was my 8th time running this race, and things were a bit more disorganized due to COVID precautions. Finding the start line was somewhat of a problem, because there were no signs indicating where it was located. Several runners and I wandered around for a good 15 minutes trying to find where we should go, and many of the course workers didn’t have a clue as to where things were. The zig-zagging at the the start was unnecessary and didn’t do anything to increase social distancing. The race itself was fine. The course was in reverse of the usual path, with some additional changes to the route that altered the scenery a bit. There were a good number of small hills, but the wind was the big obstacle. Not the worst weather conditions, but I’m sure it affected my time. All things considered, it was as best as could be expected, and I will definitely be running again next year!

First off, the Cowtown is one of the best organized races I’ve encountered. One drawback, however, is that runner’s packets can’t be picked up the day of the event (for the Sunday races), and must be claimed either the Friday or Saturday before. Apart from that, everything else is great. It starts exactly on time, and the way the runners are divided into corals (staggered start times) give everyone a little more space out of the gate. The course itself is not too bad in terms of elevation changes or sharp turns. There is one big incline across a bridge (that seems to go on forever), but apart from that, there are only a few minor hills. Running through the older part of downtown is a bit strange, because the road is made of brick and can be uneven at times. Water stations are adequately spaced, and there is a steady crowd almost everywhere along the course. Finishers’ medals are awesome, and I love how they have series editions (the previous three years awards were in the shape of spurs in bronze, silver, and gold).
