While beautiful, this race is harder than it seems. On paper, it looks like a fast downhill course with a few rolling hills. If you are not used to altitude (like myself), it will still be difficult. I had to take the hills VERY slowly to keep my heart rate from reaching zone 4 too quickly. Even though I was mentally prepared for the altitude and the beating that my quads took, what was completely out of my control was the weather. It was unusually hot for this time of year. The race started at 7:30 am in Hahn’s peak village. The race should’ve started earlier because of how warm it was going to get (78°), but I guess the race directors couldn’t make that change last minute.

The bus transportation was pretty smooth. They picked you up at 8th and Oak in downtown steamboat, and it was about a 40 minute drive to the top. Once there, there was coffee, porta potties, and other other pre-race food. The race also started on time.

Those are the positives. However, there needed to be more water stops and porta potties along the race. While the men were able to go off into the woods to do their business, there was nowhere for women. I don’t think I saw a porta potty until mile 10. The water stations were also few and far between. I would’ve liked to see about 3-4 more throughout the course. Especially in the last 6 miles. However, I was glad to see race volunteers biking up and down the course to see if anyone needed help. There was also hardly in post-race food. I think they were giving out apples.

Overall, steamboat was pretty, but I’m glad it’s over.

The Eugene Marathon is a great marathon for first timers, anyway who wants to PR, or is just there for the vibes. The expo was held at the Graduate hotel on the Friday and Saturday before race day. Packet pickup is pretty seamless and you can be in and out in under 20 minutes if you want to. As for accommodations, I would recommend staying at the Hayward Inn. It’s a 10 minute walk to the start/finish area, and was very reasonably priced. We booked about 3 months ahead of time and they had plenty of rooms. They also have a great free continental breakfast.

Race morning. There were lots of porta potties. I showed up 15 minutes before race time and there was hardly any wait in line. The race itself was very well supported. I never felt like the fueling stations were few and far between. There also seemed to be lots of bathrooms on the course. The court itself was pretty flat with a few rolling hills. I’d say the highlight about choosing this marathon is the predictable weather. It’s notoriously good. For us, it was a perfect 45 degrees at the start, 5mph winds, and overcast. 55 by the end. The only complaint I have about the course design is that there were, in my opinion, lots of sharp turns. Don’t love this as someone who had a time goal. The course was also very pretty. Not too many spectators, but very green.

The finish: one of the highlights of the race is the finish on Hayward field. Very cool experience running on the track with the finish line displayed on the Jumbotron. Overall, would highly recommend this race.

Highlights of this race included the amazing weather (45 at race start and about 60 by race end) and the sights you see along the way (loved the Blue Mile and the National Mall). I thought that there were plenty of bathrooms along the course, but more so during the second half. One thing to keep in mind is the start line. I’m pretty sure you have to walk at least 1.5 miles minimum to it. We got off at the Pentagon station and walked for at least 20-30 minutes before we were in runners village. I was not expecting that. Take an extra gel/fuel with you because of that. I also loved that the marines place the medals on you after you cross.

Packet pickup included a VERY long line. We went on Saturday and waited about half an hour just to get into the convention center.

I would encourage anybody who has signed up or is curious about this race to listen to the Strength Running Podcast episode with race Director Alex Hetherington (dated October 5, 2023). It deep dives into the logistics, race history, and how to approach running the course.

Overall, I think this is a great marathon for first timers and for anyone who likes big city marathons.

I was supposed to run the marathon, but it got cancelled so I ran the half.
Going into the race I was so excited to cross of South Dakota as state #7. However, due to inclement weather (which this race has a history of), the organizers emailed participants three days before the race (race was on Sunday and we got the email on Thursday). I don’t know who I wanted to blame more: the organizers for scheduling a marathon in late August or myself for knowing this race has a history of bad weather and signing up for it anyway. On race day, conditions were 75 degrees with 95% humidity and completely overcast. It had been years since I had been training for a 3:55 marathon, so I was proud of myself for my PR, considering the less than ideal conditions. I’m going to cross off South Dakota next year, but I will not be returning to this race.

The course itself was alright. We ran on sidewalks when we got to the falls area, which I didn’t love. I also heard there was a shortage of bathrooms during the race. I heard from a friend afterwards that he didn’t see a bathroom for a really long time and had to go in the woods. One think that I did like was the medal. I thought it was really well designed, and I’m proud to display it with my half medals. There was no issue with parking and the post race food was alright. There was no sports drink available after the race, which was surprising. Overall, this race is a hit or miss, so if you sign up for the full, don’t be shocked if it gets cancelled.

Expo: Very smooth and easy to park. Marathoners got a long sleeve tee and half got a regular tee.

Race day: I believe there were about 1400 marathoners this year, which is a pretty decent size. Parking was pretty easy. We left our house, which was about 20 minutes away, at 6:10 and was in our corale at 6:40.

The big takeaway from this race is that there is a lot on the first half. The second half goes through Iroquois park, which is really hilly between miles 11.5-14.5 with no crowd support. Marathoners also rejoin the half marathoners for, I believe, miles 18-22. Then we split off again and rejoin for the last 1.5. It was so annoying having to weave through all of the half walkers. I was wondering what other marathoners thought about this too. I thought there was plenty of hydration stations, but there definitely could’ve been more porta potties on the second half. At one point, you run through the corales again where there were a TON of bathrooms, but you can’t get to them because the barricades were still up from the morning.

Post race: nothing really special about any post-race food. They gave you entire bottles of Powerade, but no bottles of water.

Weather: temps were 65 from the start and ended around 74. My guess is that the weather for this race could be a hit or a miss. The day before our race, the morning temps were in the 50s, so we were off from perfect weather by 1 day.

Overall I would recommend this race as a great half marathon, but I wouldn’t recommend the full if you’re trying to PR. But if you’re going to enjoy Kentucky, then maybe this race is for you!

This was my 6th or 7th time running the Go! and I think it was the best yet. The race starts in Forest Park and ends in downtown under the Arch. The course has improved from years past by strategically placing hills at the beginning, except for the very cruel uphill finish. This was one of those finishes where you think you’re about to come across the finish line, but then turn the corner at mile 26.1 only to see a steep uphill finish. Other than that, I actually appreciated the 10 mile out and back along the river because it was very flat and the breeze felt pretty nice.

However, areas where the race could improve is the expo. It needs to be indoors. They should’ve known the the unpredictability of the weather that it could cause an issue with it being held outside. Moreover, because it was a general outdoor expo, there were very few running-focused booths. Along the race itself, the port potty’s were sparse, although there were probably 50 at the beginning and end. The end of the race few was pretty typical; however, they didn’t give us a bag to carry our goodies, so I wasn’t able to pick up everything they were handing out. Overall, it was an excellent day, and I recommend this race to anyone looking for a Missouri race.

This was the second time I ran Little Rock, but the first time I ran the marathon (did the half in 2020). Ran it with my dad who is a slower runner. The only thing we were disappointed with was that they basically ran out of food if you finished from 5:50 on. All they had was potato chips and soda. Other than they, it was great weather and, of course, a great medal. The hills on the back end of the course are modest. This is where you get a lot of your elevation from. I was also impressed by the course support throughout the race. There were tons of volunteers handing out fuel. I think I counted 16 water stations in total. Would definitely recommend to a beginner marathoner.

My dad and I drove from St. Louis for this race and we were not disappointed. We did the half marathon (#8 for me). For the last couple of years it had rained during race day, but we got very lucky this year with sunshine and 65 degree temps. Every year, they have a different theme to the race and this year was 80’s themed. Everything was themed from e.g. the race expo, the medal, the bib.

The course itself had a large out-and-back section. This was between miles 5 through 8, if I remember correctly. I personally don’t like out-and-backs, but to each their own. The race was fueled with bananas, so if you’re use to other fueling sources like gels, I suggest that you bring your own. Another thing that I thought was really cute was the L’Oreal lipstick booth right before the finish line. I definitely recommend this race to midwesterners. The bling is awesome and an overall fun experience.
