I used this website last year when trying to find a fall marathon, and now having run the race, I’m glad I did! It was a beautiful course (very scenic) that was extremely flat, and though it was a bit foggy at the start, it was great running weather. This was the smallest race I’ve done, so there were times I couldn’t see another runner and with it being a trail, there wasn’t a ton of on course support. The community comes out to run the water stops and the race expo was in a brewery in Marlinton, so it was cool that the community was involved in the race. One small nit pick would be that I wish the shirt wasn’t cotton, but the medal is cool, and I got a nice picture frame for getting second in my age group. Overall, I would recommend!

A fun run around Chapel Hill! Lots of people, but the course is really wide for the most part. Felt great until I hit that hill at the end, but still came out of it with a PR! The medal was cute, and I like the shirt. I think I was expecting a little more out of the post-race area, but they still had snacks and vendors. Overall, a fun and well attended race!

This was a classic big city marathon. We decided to run it because it was a flat course in a new city, and we were excited! The race expo was huge, and we enjoyed the post race food, medal/swag, and being so close to our hotel. While the day turned out okay in the end (PB!), I started off with the 3:55 pace group, who was going at an 8:30/mile pace through mile 10. I decided to abandon that group because that pace was not what I trained for, but I was bummed because I was excited to have a pace group (since it’s a big marathon) to help ensure I reached my sub-4 hours goal. Turns out, when I caught back up with the 3:55 group later in the marathon, that pacer ran off to do his own race, leaving the other pacer to try and get the group back on track. It’s unfortunate that the pacer abandoned his post and messed up the pacing for the first half, and I would expect better out of such a big marathon. Other than that though, if you’re looking for a big city marathon, this is a good option!

Ran this during grad school, and boy, was it hilly! Other than that though, the course ended up being over half a mile longer than a half marathon. Also, the race expo was extremely small, and my boyfriend and I both got different shirts (we ran the same race). They had food for sale at the end of the race, but I don’t think they had much or any post-race snacks at the end. It felt like the runners were an afterthought at times, so this won’t be a race I return to.

A super flat course with a sick medal and great post-race food (I.e. chocolate milk)! Plus, the race expo was cool, lots of vendors! The one logistical hurdle for this race was the shuttle bus to the start – make sure you budget enough time to get from the parking lot to the start. I also liked how they had a rolling start – my partner and I went out after the first rush of people and we didn’t have to start out super bunched up (though we did have to pass a good amount of people once we hit the trail, which was narrower than other parts of the race). Overall, would recommend this one!
