Awesome, awesome race. My 7th marathon and my favorite
– Production and organization is great. So polished and well put together.
– Great swag: beautiful medal, free tote, tee, bottle, and more after finish.
– Gorgeous course with some challenging sections, but mostly flat and fast. Great crowd support for a midsized race too.
– Finish on Hayward Field is completely magical–track feels amazing, crowd is rocking, gave me goosebumps.

I’ll preface by saying this was my first world major so the scale of it all was new to me, I’m also from the US and my travel was a nightmare. Arrive more days in advance than you think in case of any hiccups.

The Good:
– The course highlights running around the Victory Column and through the Brandenburg Gate are as good as you imagine
– Packet pickup at The Messe was very efficient
– Not much free swag, but the Adidas merch is awesome
– Start/finish area is easy to get to by transit. The meetup point sorted by letters of names is a life saver.
– Fantastic crowd support: lots of music, lots of noise and club/brand support
– Awesome medal

The Bad:
– The start area is mayhem: people pooping in the woods (watch your step!), no volunteers guiding you to the entrance of the corrals so me and a thousand other runners had to jump multiple barriers to get in after the gun
– Plastic cups at hydration stations are hard to drink from and are a slipping hazard
– 2025 was the hottest on record, dangerous conditions for many
– The course is book ended by iconic landmarks, but not much variety of scenery in between

It’s a cool race, if I had been lucky with prime PR weather and a great run, I would probably be raving about the experience. But based on what I was dealt, I’m probably happy to say I ran Berlin once and won’t be itching to get back.

You know going in, but it bears reiterating, it’s mid-August in Central Ohio which means a high chance that it’ll be hot and humid. That’s what happened in the 2025 edition: 73F w/ 90% humidity at the start line. Red flags on course.

The course is very hilly for Columbus, with hills early and late. Luckily, the final 2.5 miles are almost all downhill. There’s a handful of hairpin switchbacks on the course that feel unnecessary and mostly occur in the final 4 miles, there were plenty of volunteers ensuring you didn’t miss the turns, but those turns weren’t fun. The water stations were frequent and well-attended, on this hot day they made a point to offer you 2 cups as you ran through. In terms of crowd support, there isn’t really. A scattering of people here and there, but this is not a major event that draws the city out.

My GPS had me short on distance and there’s no room to run through the finish to get that last .05 miles or so–that’s only annoying for the Strava stats. You get plenty of free tickets for things at the finish line, but I didn’t take advantage. They did hand out ice water towels due to the high heat, that was great!

Overall, it’s still a smaller race that’s well-organized. Pretty tough course, especially in the Summer.

It’s a fast course, mostly flat with no punchy climbs. We got lucky in 2025 with PERFECT marathon weather (40F, clear skies, no wind). It started at 6:30AM in 2025 which I think affected crowd turnout–support was pretty sparse and energy was pretty low. The highlight of the course is the stadium finish, otherwise the scenery is unremarkable (residential streets, metropark paths, rail trail.). The stretch from mile 20-25 could be brutal if you’re beginning to struggle. It’s a straight line for 5 miles on a rail trail, no crowd support, no scenery, just you and the home stretch.

Logistics were great. I was a late sign-up after my original race was cancelled, the organizers accommodated me to do a race day bib pickup after my travel plans changed. Easy to manage crowd size at the start, shuttles to/from some hotels. I wasn’t able to attend the expo, signed up too late to get any swag, and I skipped the post-race celebration area, but I know there was a free beer waiting for me if I did.

‘Meaningful Miles’ holds true. The children and families of children from Nationwide Children’s hospital have made me misty eyed every time (have your tissues ready for the angel mile at Mile 11). I ran Columbus as my first marathon and have run it again. The field size is great, big enough to feel like an event, but small enough that you’ll eventually get some breathing room. The course is mostly flat with a long grind of a hill from about 18-20. That hill coincides with the least crowd support, so buckle in.

The race is very well organized with a great expo and logistics. The weather has been absolutely perfect both times I’ve run it (partly cloudy, 40s-50s). I love this race.

2026 UPDATE AFTER SPECTATING:
– Horrible race organization
— No permits/police helping traffic where the bike path crosses state highways. Many angry drivers, some unsafe close calls, volunteers almost got run over.
— Almost no signage/markings to start/finish once you’re back in town, our runner got lost and missed her time goal bc of it.
— Ran out of water cups. Volunteers weren’t good at handing off cups.
— 1 porta potty at the water stop, had a line
– they changed the course to a 6.6mi out/back, meaning you run the same segment 4 times)

BELOW IS FROM MY RUNNING EXPERIENCE IN 2024:
– If the weather is good, like it was for me, it’s lightning fast. But the course is pretty exposed in the plains, so a windy day would not be fun.
– BORING course. It’s a straight line, not much to see.
– Crowd support is almost non-existent. At my pace, I ran 80% of the race without runners around me, so get used to being alone.
– No frills logistics. Show up on the morning, get your bib, walk 100 ft to the start. Once the race is over, it’s 100yds to your car and your on the road.
– Cheap

Great hometown race that feels like a bigger event than it is. For my money, the celebration village at Cap City is better than at the Columbus Marathon in the Fall and crowd support is good throughout. There’s beer, real food, live music and more in the Columbus Commons area. The course takes you by most of the highlights of urban Columbus, starting and finishing in the heart of downtown. It’s a pretty flat course with the exception of a very punchy climb right around mile 12 as you navigate around Nationwide Arena.
