Come to Jackson to learn about the important civil rights history that took place here, hear their pride in the musical roots, drink in the warm southern hospitality…but make that the purpose for visiting and not just for the race. This race was harder than I anticipated, with numerous hills and quite a lot of broken asphalt needing repair, so you had to watch your footing. Although, having the route go past so many fascinating historical sites and markers (take photos of the signs and read them afterwards) was awesome, there were very, very few spectators. Those that were there…friendly police officers, cheerleaders & marching band from Jackson State University, group of folks giving out shots of Fireball by their home, one lady giving out Girl Scout cookies…did represent fine southern hospitality. There were only about 5 “bands” other than the marching band in the 1/2 marathon and sometimes that was a guy in a chair with a harmonica & a guitar, just to set your expectations. Stay at the Westin hotel – close to the race & super friendly, helpful staff everyday! If you can, I recommend to watch the movie “Ghosts of Mississippi” before you come for the race so you start to get a feel for the important role Jackson has played in Civil Rights history of this nation. Make sure to plan for at least 3hrs to walk through the interactive Civil Rights Museum, which was so impactful to me and my friends to tour the afternoon before the race. Plan for 40 min to take an Uber out to visit the Medger Evers home, read the Info outside his home, pay your respects, and come back to downtown. Speaking of Uber, you will get a wide variety of Uber drivers & vehicles here – May be worth it to go Premium if you’re not adventurous. Good southern cooking & good seafood is strong in Jackson! Bread pudding @ Estelle’s, Oysters & Po’Boys @ Dragos, musical ambiance, blues museum & appetizers @ The Iron Horse are all great dining choices. Walking into the history of Jackson was powerful, so if you go, make time to learn about the strength of the courageous pioneers that walked the streets of Jackson, and the musical roots that started here.

I’d highly recommend this fast race through an ultra clean & friendly city! As a slower, interval runner that started way back in a slower pace group, I was constantly working to beat the aggressive and oddly placed cut-offs throughout the race, although I was impressed they had count down clock at each cut-off to show how close you are to the cut-off time, so no math was required! Hooray! Don’t worry – all of the cut offs are clearly outlined in the handbook. I started with a bit of a delay not reaching the starting line until 20 min into the race due to the large number of runners, but I made it! Overall, this race is flat, fast and has excellent support on the course! It was great to have a few areas of “out and back” where you could see the top runners at the front of the race for a shot of inspiration! What impressed me the most about the race was the enthusiasm of the race volunteers, even for the back of the pack runners like me. Even though it rained the ENTIRE race, they never lost their spirit to cheer for every runner! Several Japanese groups danced and played music along the route giving lots of entertainment. Was great to see early blooming cherry blossoms amid the route! I didn’t try the electrolyte they offered in the race, called “Sweat” but there were plenty of aid stations. Finish line was not in sight until the last 100m so was hard to stay motivated at end but I did truly appreciated how they had signs to “count down” the distance towards the end of the race to help keep you focused. After having an incredible lift seeing my amazing friends for the 1st time close to the finish line, and then crossing that line, achieving my goal of running on all 7 continents, I was on a high and then quickly & harshly brought back to reality to then have to walk a loooonnngggg way (almost a mile) on a cold, windy path with lots of uncertain turns that kept me questioning if I should really be following the runners in front of me, all to get back to the bus depot to catch a shuttle that dropped me off fairly close to my hotel. I wasn’t exactly prepared for that part, but a hot shower soon after cured all! I did find many friendly fellow runners in the race as well, as you’ll often find in the back of pack, so it wasn’t lonely running on my own at all. I’m amazed at how such a huge city could keep their streets so clean & truly bring the most enthusiastic people out to work the event and cheer for people they didn’t even know, but Tokyo exceeded my expectations of a global marathon in a major city! Arigato Tokyo!

I was unable to make the 31km cut off by 5 hrs so I & the others running near me were pulled from the course. The directions for the trail section were good. I was with a pack at the back and there was always police, either on horseback or by car after the last runner. After being immediately transported to the finish line after the first cutoff, race officials were kind enough to give myself & those pulled from the marathon course a 1/2 marathon medal since we had cleared the 21km mark. Water stops were not as prevalent along the route as needed so I’d recommend wearing hydration. Cumulative elevation changes of 3800ft so practice strategies for steep, winding hills both up and down. Friends who finished after the 7hr finish cut-off were still given a medal, but were marked as DNF for the official results. We had to be adamant with the race officials to keep up the “finish” banner for our friends that finished at 7hr 45min because they had already started to tear down the finishing area despite our requests to keep up the finishing chute. They had a box lunch for all finishes and lots of coke and water after. They had nice cushions on the ground at the finish to relax, stretch and cheer for others finishing. The main hotel is less than 200 meters from the finish so very convenient. The start of the race is a 2km walk from hotel. Overall, spectacular race with the scenery and intimate feel with only 187 runners, but the most challenging course (hills, sand, rocky) and temps (no shade) make this an adventure. Excellent post race party the following evening!! Great food, entertainment and dancing! Locals were very friendly and always felt safe. Food at hotel was excellent and rated as best in the city.
