I’ve run this race twice, 12 years apart, and will never do it again. The field size this time was too large for Boston’s narrow, pot hole-filled streets. In fact, I was knocked down during the first two minutes of the race by a passing runner (I was in the 9 min/mi corral) because we were packed in like sardines! In addition to the half, there is a 5 mile race that starts an hour later than the half marathoners. The back of the pack 5 milers (many of whom were walking) caused a backlog during the last 3-4 miles and I had to weave around them on the narrow streets. When I crossed the finish line desperate for medical help, I was told I couldn’t enter an unauthorized area, yet the entrance to the medical area was not obvious (at least to me). I have a badly sprained ankle and my knee has a big gash due to the fall. At least the medical volunteers were nice once I finally hobbled my way into the tent.

Despite the epic weather conditions, I finished feeling strong and healthy which I owe in large part to the diehards that braved the elements to cheer us on and the amazing volunteers that guided, helped, and supported from start to finish. Also, being a local I had the benefit of training on the course and knew what to expect at each hill and turn. This was my first Boston–and hopefully not my last!
