This is my 4th NYC Marathon and here’s how I can best sum it up: it’s hard, it’s a party, you’re a celebrity.
It’s Hard:
-Corralling 50,000 people to the start line will always be a challenge. Prepare to start your journey early and lots of waiting along way. Waiting to get on the ferry, waiting to get on a coach bus, walking, sitting at the village. It’s not convenient for any runner but it’s damn near impressive how they do it (even if it takes forever and can be frustrating).
-The course is hard. Bridges, bridges, bridges. 5th Ave Hill. Sometimes the course gets too small and there is a bottleneck because the crowd is so dense. It’s not an easy course!
It’s a party:
-The crowd is electric from start to finish. Every borough shows up in different ways. After living here for close to 15-years, I can safely say that it is a perfect representation of the city I love.
-Go to a bar or restaurant after. Trust me – the party does not stop once you’ve finished the race.
You’re a celebrity:
-In NYC, you’re treated like royalty. Anyone seeing you in a post-race poncho or a medal is going to call you out and tell you congrats! Restaurants the night before, the waiter will always ask “so who here is running?” There are amazing free opportunities for runners from shakeout runs with celebs to free pasta trucks, slices of pizza, short massages.
-The expo makes you feel like a big deal!
TBH you’ll be spoiled if this is your first marathon. However, EVERYONE should try to run this race. It is unlike anything else in the world.

I could not recommend this race more to anyone looking for a PR!
-Expo: Expo was small but well organized and stocked! The swag was initially very appealing, but it was all too large. Many runners were talking about this! The medium was closer to an XL and I’ll sadly never wear the jacket they provided me because it is too big.
-Pre-Race and Start-line: You have to take a bus to the starting line and it was very well organized! Once at the starting line, they had an indoor place to stay warm, plenty of porta potties, and the smoothest bag check operation for a point-to-point race I’ve experienced! Downside of the start line was that there weren’t corrals to separate paces; of course most runners found their group paced on the pacer signs but there plenty in the wrong pace group so the first bits of the race were people catching up or getting passed, not making for the most ideal first mile. There was a DJ at the start but they only played Sweet Caroline and that is NOT a pump-up song (that’s like leaving the ballfield, not getting ready for the game lol).
-Course: Beautiful!! Fast!!!
-Post-Race: This was THE BEST POST RACE EVER. They had hot foods, variety of drinks and fruits and bars, a section for ice, a stretch tent, photo opps, etc. It was amazing!
Lastly, the staff were all so friendly and staff that met me at the Expo found me at the finish line to ask how I did. What lovely people!

Course Difficulty – I live in Brooklyn and was fully prepared for Flatbush Hill and the hills in Prospect Park. I still severely underestimated how difficult the second half of the race is. The race is nearly flat for the first 4Mi, a small hill a little past 5Mi. Then, you climb about a 150ft of elevation from 6.5 – 7.5mi and the rest of the race is made of two out-and-backs of brutal rolling hills. The turn arounds on both the out-and-backs were at the bottom of the hill, killing any momentum you had to take the uphill because you are forced to a 180 turn. I clocked in 505ft total gain – nearly all in the second half. Save gas in the tank.
Scenery: Hills aside, it is a beautiful course. You get to see many different neighborhoods of Brooklyn, run under 3 of the bridges, past Barclay Center, Brooklyn Museum, Grand Army Plaza, Prospect Park. My family from out of town raved about the scenery.
Race Production – Sheesh. ROUGH. First, the expo was chaotic and left little to be desired, but in a neighborhood with a few breweries so that was a plus. Starting line was a complete mess: not enough toilets (took nearly an hour to use one), no announcements, started late. The finish line did not provide heat-sheets and it was 55 degrees and pouring rain – folks in my groups were shivering and lips turning blue. Actually incredibly dangerous. There were no signs at the finish so other folks in my group missed the food, others got lost going to the bag check. Also no nutrition on the course. IDK why when the fee was so high. Honestly, everything before and after the course was so entirely chaotic and poorly managed. The race itself is lovely. Just know what you’re getting into.
Swag – Cute running shirt but nothing to get too excited about. The medal also cheap.
