I have run the Des Moines half marathon 3 times in the last 4 years because I love it so much. For some reason whenever I have done the race the weather has been beautiful. While it was a little windy, it wasn’t too hot nor too cold—probably because it’s at a great time of the year.
The course really highlights the city. You get to see downtown Des Moines and run through the beautiful Gray’s Lake and Water Works park. The course is mostly flat which is great for getting a PR.
The support is amazing from all the family and friends cheering to the water stations and bike support handing out tissues. The after party has tons of free food and drinks.
The expo the days before have great deals, I was able to sample a lot of products from Honey Stinger and pick up a new pair of shoes. I also was able to sign up for another local race.
I also love the medal because I did the 5 mile the day before it clipped together by magnets with my half marathon medal. It’s probably the coolest medal combo I’ve gotten.
Certainly a race that I will continue to do!

I did this race with work buddies. This was really fun! It’s early in the season so it was a bit chilly but also really nice. The course was really pretty around Jester Park.
Packet pick up, at a local brewery—enough said.
The post-race party and food was great! They had beer, they had bagels and they had chili. I didn’t realize how nice it was to have a bagel and chili post-race. All races should have chili.
Definitely would do it again.

I was very excited to run in the 40th anniversary race. It had potential to be really great and for the most part it was awesome! It’s a really flat race and is well supported. The community that comes out to support the half and full is really great, they had sprinklers for runners to run through and cool off.
The only thing that worked against me was the heat. I guess it can be hit and miss with the weather at that time of the year but the heat definitely effected me and slowed me down.
Because of the time of year I’m hesitant to do it again but I would have no problem with the half!
