This is a great early season February race that attracts Arizona locals and out-of-state visitors alike. It’s a small race– limited to 400– and sells out quickly. Participants are bussed to the start line at the base of Superstition Mountains very early in the morning (4:30-6am) and the race starts at 7am. There are little fire pits set up and a warming bus so you can keep somewhat warm before the race begins. Gear bags will be bussed back to the finish line. This is a SCENIC COURSE with the first 6 miles taking place during sunrise on a compact dirt road amongst saguaro cactus! The next 20 miles are on road through Apache Junction. You’ll head down a main highway, and through residential areas. Don’t get caught speeding too much in the downhill sections, as that mistake might kick you in the butt later like it did me! Plenty of water stations. Also be prepared for the beating sun to bring down some warmth by 9am. Overall a great race and would definitely recommend!

Great course for a first timer or seasoned professional! Very scenic out and back course, pretty flat. One complaint would be the lack of portajohns on the course. MORE

The race starts early– 5 or 6 am, I can’t remember– to beat the heat. And boy do you need it! It gets so hot and humid!! The course is an out and back for the full distance, and halfers are bussed to the start. I “raced” the half at an easy pace to just have fun and I had an absolute blast! Some of the water stations went all out with costumes and props and just made the experience very fun. I came in third in my age group, and was able to bring back a trophy as a souvenir! Fun!! It was a humbling honor to be part of this race in beautiful Placencia, Belize. If you’re considering this race, be sure to note the sign up deadline!

She Runs (formerly Gazelle Girl) is for females (and female-identifying) only, which creates a very SUPPORTIVE and unique experience. Excellent crowd support with lots of families and kids with “Go, MOM!” signs. The race director team makes sure to support ALL runners/walkers, and they even offer what they call “team sparkle” which hangs out at the back of the pack to ensure that racers at the end are included and not alone. The race directors change the course every couple years and highlight areas in Grand Rapids.
