First of all, this is most definitely one of the most stunning marathons on Earth. It is relatively flat. The on-course organization was great and had a timely start. Though I was a little disappointed with my performance, it was a great first marathon and the memory of running through the course made it worth it.
I did have a few things to note that I wish they would improve to make it even better. First – the bib pickup. The Expo itself was fine, however, choosing to place it in Arco and not notifying participants (many not local, like myself) that public transportation stops running by 6:30pm on Friday was not a good choice. Since we didn’t know and assumed they would have organized it in a way that would work with public transport, we went in the afternoon. The only way (without a car) to get back to Malcesine from Arco was by taking two buses, one from Arco to Riva and then from Riva to Arco. Of course, the Arco bus was late which meant that we missed the last bus of the day to Malcesine. Thankfully, a local restaurant helped us call a taxi but it caused a lot of unnecessary stress. I think they should either run shuttles from Riva to Arco for this or put the expo closer to the lake, since many of the participants were in Limone, Riva or Malcesine.
Second was the start – I could not get to my corral due to crowds and had to start with a slower one. This caused an issue because the first few miles are through the narrow and hilly corners of Limone, which meant that there was congestion and walking.
The rest of the marathon was good, though I made the mistake of drinking too much water at one point which derailed my race. I do wish they would consider going cupless because people were littering away from the fuel zones and I would hate for that to make it into the water.
Overall, it was a great vacation and experience but there are still some kinks they could iron out to make it perfect. Either way, I highly recommend this race and would love to go back in a few years and run it back.

From bib and shirt pickup to the finish line, I found the whole race to be well-organized. Pickup was easy, quick and seamless at the NYRR RunCenter. On the day of, there were clear signs in the park on how to get to the start line and plenty of parking in the area. Once there, enough portable bathrooms were setup to prevent lines that were too long. Corrals were easy to find and there were no start delays.
The race itself was great – weather this year was perfect for racing as it was neither too hot nor cold and the rain held-off. It is not the easiest course due to the rolling hills of Central Park but I enjoyed it more than the flat course of a place like Governor’s Island as it was more mentally engaging in terms of pacing. Racing etiquette was good and plenty of volunteers steered us to stay on-course and were ready to help, if necessary. I did see many runners complaining that the mile 4 marker was later than it should have been but that was not a problem for me, personally, since the finish line was in the right spot.
I would recommend this race as a good way to start the year and maybe your 9+1 – it’s well-organized and as someone who prefers racing in cooler conditions – just right in terms of weather this year. I PR’d despite the hills so happy with my result and a great way to start my new year!
