I ran this race since I happened to be in town at the same time. It was a fairly expensive race so I had high hopes. Expo was very bare minimum. Race swag was very ok. Just a basic cotton t-shirt.
Race day was not great. Not enough restrooms in the beginning. Also could have started earlier to avoid a bit of heat. Race was pretty crowded in the beginning with the out and back pieces. The course overall was pretty hilly.
The finish at the ballpark was fun and but their rules were very strict and was yelled at a few times by volunteers saying I can’t get back in if I leave. The “after party” was next to nothing. Hardly any snacks or drinks after the race. I would expect this for a cheaper smaller race but spending over $95 for a race you would at least expect more than a bottle of water and a few snacks.
I would not travel specifically for this race but if you are local it’s ok.

Good but could use improvement

The course is fine. New town is always fun to run through. I think I have run this race 4 or 5 times, but I think it’s time for some upgrades.
Please consider additional restrooms at the start line or have the 5k 10k on a different day. I learned my lesson from a previous cowbell but if you don’t arrive early enough you are stuck in an enormous restroom line and can’t get to the start line in time. You wind up using all of your energy weaving in and out of runners.
If you have the 5k and 10k on a different day you can have challenges built in and possibly more participants. It’s too many people with not enough facilities.
If I can offer one more bit of advice. Make the marathoners feel special. I personally like travel marathons so I only run this 1/2 because I’m local. Have different swag for them, have a cheer section specifically for the marathoners when they cross by frontier park. Do something different for them and make it worth the effort.

We came from out of town (driving). My daughter participated in the piglet run on Saturday and I completed the marathon on Sunday. The park where everything was held was beautiful and had so much going on downtown. Saturdays event was pretty crowded but well organized and it was cute to see all the kiddos run. The expo was pretty crowded. It was just a lot of stations and it was really easy to miss certain race swag, but good expo overall. Shirts were disappointing for a race shirt (cotton), but the design was nice.
Sunday was easy to navigate. Bathroom lines were not bad and were able to get into the corral no problem. Even thought there were a lot of people it flowed pretty nicely.
The course was fantastic. I was in a spot in the race where we were not notified of a shelter in place. I never felt unsafe and it was at my own risk. It made the race more exciting. Running up the hills to the overlook was beautiful and the neighborhoods were great. So much crowd support even with the weather. Running downtown everyone lined the streets. The people who live on mile 15 who decorated their houses and had a lawn party were my favorite. Water stops were plentiful and there was no lack of fuel on the course (bacon, jelly beans, sweetish fish, oranges, etc.)
Finish line festivities were very nice. It’s nice to have a medal be put around your neck vs just handed to you. So many spots to take pictures. Been at so many races where shorter races take everything and there is not enough to go around. Definitely not the case here. The only thing with all of the roads blocked off it was pretty tough to navigate with a stroller, but nothing that a little off-roading can’t handle.
If the opportunity presents itself I would 100% do this race again. Top notch volunteers, course, crowds. Cincinnati shows up! There were hills on the course? I didn’t even notice them 😉
