I’m not affiliated with the Coast Guard nor have I served in it but I wanted to support the lesser known group of the Armed Forces. Plus I needed N Carolina and it fell at the right time of my training. The temperature was near perfect. A little windy in places (expected at the coast) and the sun was shining the whole time. It never got hot but the sun does eventually get to me being under it for 5 hours. The course is super flat. I mean tortilla flat. No hills or overpasses. The course started through a very pretty neighborhood. The crowd support was decent through here. Then it takes you through the Coast Guard air base – the highlight of the race for me. After the air base is a huge old hangar that houses some airships. Also cool to see. The back part of the course is not as fun as it takes a very rural, farmland path back into town where the roads were not closed.
At the finish line you are greeted by Coast Guard members and see some cool boats. The medal is top notch. One of the best I have. You don’t get a finisher shirt but you do get a free pulled pork sandwich and a local brew. There were plenty of water stations and portables. You could tell the water stations were worked by Coast Guard family members and they were all friendly and supportive.
Overall, this is a great small town race to do and I would suggest it to anyone who wants a PR. My only complaint would be that packet pickup is not very organized and the last 10 miles of the marathon need to change to run through more scenic and closed areas. I would have loved to see more of the quaint town and the bay vs farm land.
