I say mid major because it’s less than 8K participants in the marathon. Production is top-tier. The course is very fun. The hilly parts are the most beautiful. Spectator participation, especially in the second third, really helps with motivation. Overall, I think this race is nearly equivalent to Richmond or Pittsburgh with maybe a more fun course. Richmond, a bit more scenic, Pittsburgh, a bit more tough. Would recommend the flying pig if you tried these other two and vice versa.

The run was delayed for about 2 hours and 15 minutes, meaning the gun went off at 12:15ish. I didnt finish until nearly 5, and was very ill at the end. By the time I got home it was light. But I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything, I had a blast. The run itself was a fever dream, running back and forth 8 times in pitch black conditions. The crowd participation was very good actually, helped by the fact that the course was only 5k. Due to rainy conditions, they rerouted the part of the course that went down to the falls, defeating the whole “Moonlight on the Falls” part of the race, but it still was great. The total elevation gain was about 2400, meaning it really was a tough course.

You wouldn’t know this race is basically in the middle of nowhere. Every runner is cherished. There are an abundance of aid stations. The volunteers, the town as a whole, truly go the extra mile for accommodations. And the course itself is beautiful and difficult (ie, fun!). The elevation chart should have you scratching your head, yes the course starts up a 650ft hill over the first 7 miles, with a sharp 500ft ascent over miles 5-7. Then you promptly descend 400ft over the next mile. Its fun.

Extremely crowded but goes through some of the coolest sites you’ll see while running a marathon. It’s a different vibe from most other marathons, it’s almost a unique event in itself, nearly on the level of the major US marathons, like Chicago or Boston.

Started off raining and cold, then it slow cooked us with sunny clear skies and 80 degrees. I was woefully undertrained for this one, as it was my last semester of undergrad. As for the course, it was really lively. Large crowd turn out and participation, I’d put it in the vicinity of Richmond and Flying Pig, maybe just a little below. The course, I would argue, is slightly harder than Flying Pig because many of the hills come later. The first half is very easy.

This was my first marathon. I was basically untrained. I ran with my friends, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The crowd participation has still yet to be topped in my experience, at least as good as flying pig, if not better. Beautiful course, very easy. Perfect for first timers.
