Harrisburg Marathon was a nice small race but coming from large races like Marine Corps Marathon and Richmond Marathon, I wasn’t prepared for the vast difference. Roads are not closed for this race, so they make do with with what is available/safe to run. This course doubles up on one 13.1 route made up of multiple out-and-back stretches. The course has two bridges but you cross them EIGHT TIMES. There are virtually no crowds on the course and garbage cans are few and far between aid stations, so I was carrying trash for a lot of the race. On plus side is that this course is EXTEREMLY FLAT and there is a beautiful 2.5 mile stretch right along the river. I think if you go into it knowing that you can’t rely on crowds and the scenery doesn’t change much, it could be a great race for those looking to PR on a fast & flat course.

This race is so well organized and the support from locals is unbelievable! I’d say it’s not really as flat as it’s advertised; I was expecting a flat/fast course but it was definitely more of a rolling hills type of course. I breezed right through the first half, on track to finish in under 4 hours but the bridge at mile 15 really killed my momentum and by mile 20, I knew sub 4 was not in the cards. I still managed to snag an 8 minute PR and the downhill finish seriously had me on cloud nine.

This was my very first marathon and I loved it!! The energy out on the course was amazing and crowd support was strong. I ran it in 2018 and the weather was perfect, low 50s and overcast. I had to stop and give myself a pep talk around mile 20 on the 395 “beat the bridge” part of the race but once I got past that section, I was back on track and feeling great. I finished in 4:16, which I was happy with, as a first time marathoner. The finish is emotional, as a marine puts your medal around your neck. There’s a long walk to reunite with friends/family after the race but overall, I highly recommend this race and will probably run it again.
