I had heard races in Japan are well run and wow they were not exaggerating. 20000 runners were well corralled and it felt like there were at least 1000 volunteers for the event. The expo wasn’t the biggest but it felt big enough and friendly enough for a foreigner that didn’t speak Japanese.
The whole course had cheering crowds and volunteers routing runners and handing out well stacked beverages and regional delicacies along the course. There was 1 gel handed out right after the half point.
The weather on the day was pretty perfect for the marathon (though I suspect slower runners got a bit overheated). I personally would have preferred an 8AM start vs a 9AM start.
Two complaints would be that 1. the race shirt while pretty to look at is a giant square print. I don’t know if I could realistically wear it comfortably even as daily wear (because the print makes it kind of rigid). 2. They updated the course to end at the Harborland this year to remove the hill finish but public transportation out of Harborland isn’t the best (there isn’t a nearby subway station). But overall a great race!
