As many have mentioned, London is so crowded that it makes chasing a fast time (PR/PB) challenging (weaving around others, inability to run tangents, slowing at aid stations, etc). That being said, the course is largely flat and fast and the crowd support is like no other (more energy/support than Berlin or Chicago or Boston). I had high expectations for Tower Bridge and despite that, running over it still exceeded my expectations (it’s as moving as running down Boylston but in a different way). Definitely put your name on your bib as the rows and rows of supporters want to call out your name and support you. I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to run the London Marathon but this race also reinforced to me how expectations often need to be adjusted when running (crowded) Majors.

While running Boston in 2025, I realized during the race how my preparation and strategy could have been improved (I ran the initial downhills too fast, felt it in my quads trying to get up the Newton Hills, and then began cramping when entering Brookline). It was still an amazing experience but I spent the last year wanting a 2nd chance/repeat opportunity and got it. Training block this year included required hill work and my strategy was more dialed. Throw in amazing weather and I was able to PR/PB at Boston! Boston is truly a celebration of the efforts made to qualify and the race itself is a puzzle/challenge that is a difficult needle to thread. It’s not quite the continuous block party that other World Majors provide (though Wellesley College/Boston College/Boylston are AMAZE), it’s a celebration and a tradition of a different sort that makes Patriot’s Day so special. I humbly look forward to running Boston until I can’t.

I ran LA in 2025 (the 40th Anniversary) and this year was definitely more challenging due to daylight savings time (spring forward/losing an hour of time/sleep the night before running a marathon) and the warm temps (giving runners an option to finish at mile 18). For the last 2 years, I have used LA as a long-run in preparation for Boston 2 Big Sur and Boston to London double and it definitely helped me both times. This year, I went out slower (due to the warm temps) and focused on running miles 20-26 hard/well. The downhills in the middle segments and the hills/elevation and out & back at the end were definitely helpful (physically and mentally) wrt preparing me for Boston and for London. Despite the time change and warmer weather, I still enjoyed running LA and look forward to doing so again in the coming years.

Typically a small/smaller marathon field than the 1/2 marathon field and as such, LOTS of porta potties available pre-race! Swag is nice (get both a long sleeve shirt AND a 1/4 zip). Running through downtown Carlsbad and along/next to the ocean is amazing! There is some repetition (looping) but it’s not extensive. Water stations were frequent and well organized. Mostly flat with just a few short ups and downs makes this a PR possible course.

This was my 3rd year in a row and I am likely to keep running it until I can’t. Only downside is having to train/run over the summer in preparation for this World Major. Crowd support at Chicago is like no other! Food, culture, shopping, public transportation, etc of Chicago are all on point (and helps keep me coming back).

This is a very well organized race with more than expected crowd support and great aid-stations/volunteers all along the way. The scenery is top notch, running through the DeLoach Winery (and the bottle of wine they give you) is a fun bonus, and the course is mostly flat. There are a few small rollers here and there but all very doable– just need to save a “little something” for the last 3 miles which are uphill. My goal was to try and add to my BQ cushion with this race but an injury in July forced me to change my plans. I’m glad I still ran it and really enjoyed the experience (despite not racing it).

It’s helpful to be prepared for the early morning start (3:45 AM bus to the start line) and for potential cold/rainy conditions (reportedly the VIP’s have access to a heated tent with their own port o potties and drinks/eats). Only 6 days between Boston & Big Sur this year so it was hard to know what was left in my legs/what I had left to give (keep an open mind wrt pacing). Surprisingly, I may have performed better at Big Sur (largely b/c this was my 2nd go around at Big Sur and to help of pacers/running with pace group). Simply the most beautiful marathon I have run with rolling hills & some elevation (up to Hurricane Point). The race is well run (from the expo to the transport to the aid stations to the finish) and the Big Sur/Carmel/Monterey area is such a fun place to visit (with such tasty eats). Cannot recommend Boston 2 Big Sur enough and am hopeful I might have the opportunity to run them again in the future!!

I trained diligently (highest mileage to date) and practiced hills (larger/steeper than Heartbreak) and thought I was prepared but I did not train for the downhills enough! By the time I was through Wellesley and arriving in Newton, I was already starting to feel it in my legs. Running Boston makes you quickly realize how you need to train for Boston. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to give it another go next spring and hope to not make the same mistake twice! Crowds/food/Patriot’s Day are all part of what make Boston so special.

Unisex shirt doesn’t fit anyone particularly well. Buses from finish line (Century City) to start (Dodgers Stadium) were many and easy to get on/off. Plenty of port-o-potties. Corrals were well organized. Course was great (rolling hills). Be prepared for out and back finish. Consider staying the entire day/Sunday post race and leaving on Monday (to celebrate/enjoy) and because the post race traffic/congestion in Century City is significant/challenging.

Similarly as fast and fun as Berlin but more organized (expo, corrals, etc). This was my 2nd Chicago Marathon and am tempted to keep going back/running it back (if I can time qualify). Weather was near perfect. Crowd support is as good as it gets (but have not yet experienced NYC). Food (pre and post) in Chicago is on point (so many choices). CTA (trains) makes getting around the city a breeze (also to/from airport).

Berlin is as flat and fast as they say it is! Am very appreciative to have run the 50th Anniversary shortly after turning 50 myself. With over 50k runners/finishers, it was likely a bit more strained/crowded than usual/other years but it was still an amazing World Major experience– beautiful neighborhoods/scenery /landmarks and vocal crowd support/great bands/music along the way. Running through the Brandenburg gates is as epic a finish as there is (for me, it was as special as turning on to Boylston Street or finishing in Hayward Field). If you can get in, do it. The expo/crowds/etc are more than worth it.

There’s a reason Eugene, OR is known as Track Town USA. They seriously know how to put on/host a race (in this case, a marathon). Expo was fab, amazing keynote speaker, swag is on point, and finishing inside Hayward Field is something I/you will never forget. Course has a few rollers but is largely fast and fun. Race conditions this year were the best I’ve ever had on a marathon morning (cool/limited sun until the end/later in AM). Just do it.

Buses to start line were organized, plenty of port-o-potties, strong crowd support, lots of pace groups, and finish line area was fun. Sacramento is sneaky fun too (plenty of eats and breweries). Was thrilled to find out I lotteried into the field! Even though the race instructions and course information was clear and helpful, I did not appreciate how cold and long the wait would be at the start line before the race started– dress warm! (some people even packed/got into a sleeping bag). Bag check at this race is on-point and easy to both drop off and retrieve at the end. Also, the 3:45 AM bus transport pick-up time is no joke and requires eating early and going to bed early. Last thing to keep in mind is the potential for really strong head winds! Being mentally prepared to deal with this is also a must.
