This is my second time running this race and I must say that this race gets better with age (the number of times you do it). This was the first race I ever did back in 2022 and it was such a wonderful experience that I knew I had to come back in 2023 and so I did. If you are looking for a good first time marathon in Utah then Ogden is the best choice, if you’re looking to get a PR then Ogden is a great choice, if you’re looking for a fun and well organized race then Ogden is the race for you.

I loved and disliked a lot about this race so I will break this out in two parts (Pros & Cons).

Pros – The participant size of this race makes the beginning exciting and energy filled. The aid stations were plentiful and had everything you needed to get you to the finish line, I personally was very grateful for the Icey Hot offered every 3 or so miles. The scenery is beautiful, although you don’t get much of it until the back half of the race.

Cons – The expo is very small so you didn’t get to enjoy in some of the early festivities that some races offer. The medals are cool with the local stone used to make the actual medal part but the ribbon and the race bibs are very plain for a large race like this. The Finish Line needs to offer spectator viewing from both sides instead of just one side since the turn out is so large. The start time is at 7am and it really should be early to avoid the St. George heat, I couldn’t imagine being out in the heat any longer than I had to so I feel bad for those that were in it more than 4 hours.

Ogden was suggested to me as a great first marathon to try by multiple sources and I couldn’t have agreed more after completing it yesterday. I had hoped to get under 4hrs and I was able to accomplish that goal with a 3:49:13 and that’s largely impart to the course being primarily downhill. The volunteers were great and cheery and there were an abundance of aid stations and support to help keep you going. The one thing I could suggest to the race organizers is to have more porta potties at the start of the race, the lines to go potty were insane and I nearly missed the start trying to use them.

I paced this race for the 2hr runners and if I am being honest I probably wouldn’t fork out the money to run this race as the production was very low quality in comparison to other Half Marathons and Marathons I have ran in the state of Utah. If I did pay to run this Half Marathon it’s probably because it’s my first one or I am a local to Springville and want to support and showcase the community to others. Since I was a pacer this doesn’t bother me too much but they did not have medals ordered and delivered in time for the finishers so no medals were awarded at the finish and instead we received an email the day before explaining this so not sure if they intend to ship medals to all participants but that’s going to a cost a pretty penny if they do. This race has great potential with its backdrop, seriously the view are spectacular down the whole canyon, but I think they need a new director or possibly some bigger sponsors to come in to help make this race what it could be.
