This is a challenging trail run with a total elevation gain of about 3,500 ft, most of which occurs in the first 4 miles. I travelled from San Diego to Issaquah because I had heard of this challenging race and the steep, technical aspects of the trail. It did not disappoint! It was steep. And it was hot. The scenery was beautiful, having trained in an arid environment it was lovely to experience something different and run through a lush green forest. Really glad I did this and I would definitely recommend to anyone who has some experience with trail running, who wants to push themselves and who wants an amazing trail running experience without worrying too much about your time.

I had been looking forward to my first Vacation Races experience for months. It was a great opportunity to see Yellowstone with the kids for the first time and what a brilliant way to see to it. I did not expect the difference in altitude as I live and run at sea level so this ended up being my slowest half marathon time. However that should not deter anybody from this race as the overall experience was fantastic. I mostly run trails and I really enjoyed how muddy this course was. I lost a shoe in the mud at one point! That was a real laugh as I had to get down and pull it out from the mud with both hands! I wore trail shoes but still lost a shoe! It was a lot of fun and I was smiling for the rest of the race. The course is beautiful and there is one section where you run by beautiful South Fork Madison River toward the end. There is a tough, unrelenting hill at mile 6 which was challenging due to the altitude. Vacation Races does a great job organizing this event. The podcast was very helpful. West Yellowstone was a fun place to stay prior the race with some great places to eat.

After 2 years of anticipation, this marathon was well worth the wait! It’s not every day you get to have the opportunity to run on Highway 1. This is a challenging marathon given the relentless hills and the overall elevation gain but worth the effort as the views of the ocean and the natural beauty of Big Sur are awe inspiring and stay with you long after the race is done. It was a surreal experience to be running with several thousand other runners on Highway 1 with live classical music drifting on the wind as you approach Bixby Bridge. This is definitely a marathon that you experience rather than focusing on getting to the finish line.

Also, this is a very well organized race. There are frequent e-mails about what to plan for and what to expect on race weekend so that you are well informed prior to arriving in Monterey. Transportation to the start of the race on race day also went smoothly. Dress warm as it gets cold at that time of the morning in Big Sur! I recommend gloves and/or dressing in a plastic garbage bag. Also, it can get quite windy when you approach the ocean, so much so that it can feel like aqua jogging.

In essence, this is a fantastic, beautiful and challenging marathon and I would run it every year if I could. Well worth it!
