Just finished my 31st Big Sur Marathon. I ran the inaugural race in 1986 , which also happened to be my very first marathon , and fell in love.
I hear First time Runner’s of BSIM always asking the same question : how bad is Hurricane Point? Hurricane Point is a 2 mile uphill stretch from the Little Sur Bridge to the top of the hill known as Hurricane Point.
Here’s the thing ; Hurricane Point hill is long but not steep. If you’ve signed up for BSIM you’re pretty much aware that it is a hilly course and have probably (hopefully) trained on some hills. Hurticane Point hill starts at mile 10 and ends at mile 12 , from there a it’s downhill to the halfway mark at Bixby Bridge. It is fairly early in the race and really is not as bad as it sounds. Your real work is from around mile 17 to mile 23. The hills from there are short but relentless and tiring. You crest one and think “aahhh” and there is another right in front of you. If you plan on running this one next year my advice to everyone is to conserve your energy for the 2nd half of this race.
