  • I run because:

    I can. I spent a decade unable to run due to injury. A long, slow, careful recovery led me from barely able to run a mile to running half marathons and then, finally, a full marathon. Running is a blessing and I will never take it for granted.

I first ran this race in 2015, at the end of my first season in California. This is the first race I’ve been a repeat runner at simply because of the course. You very quickly enter the countryside, climbing up above and running around a lake. There is a lot of run time in the park, too. It’s so nice to have a road race with scenery that comes close to trail race scenery. It’s also a fun experience to run on the drag strip. The miles just fly by. My first time running this race, I had to take an emergency bathroom break; this year was redemption as I cruised to my second fastest half marathon time ever, enjoying the course more than I had the first time around.

Survives Through the Bridge

My husband and I were looking forward to running this race for three years, and were finally able to do so this past March. We were a bit disappointed. The highlight of this race is running across the Golden Gate Bridge, which was fantastic (and several other races feature this as well), but the rest of the course is boring (especially when running on long, straight, stretches of hard pavement next to the ports). The expo is small, and I was given a hard time about bringing my dog, an emotional support animal, into the expo venue (first time anywhere I’ve ever had push-back, and that should NEVER happen). City regulations also require a quiet, rather low-key and unenthusiastic start, not at all characteristic of the Rock N’ Roll Series. San Francisco is probably not a city we’ll run again, no matter who is organizing the race.
