Another really good Rock N Roll race. Really cool to run down Constitution avenue past the Smithsonian Museums and DC monuments. DC has a lot of hills and a monumentally tough hill right after mile 6, coming out of Rock Creek Park into Adams Morgan. That one was tough!!! As with all of the Rock N Roll races, there were a lot of bands playing and DJs spinning on the streets for the race. The water/gatorade stations were copious. There was plenty of energy gels, but I don’t like the kind that were handed out – SIS. I think they are gross! I got two medals – one for the actual race and another nice one for running this one after the Virginia Beach Rock N Roll. There were two things that could have been much better: 1. How are you going to have a music themed race in Washington, DC and there were NO GO-GO bands!?!?!?!? DC is the home of Go-Go! Do better, Rock N Roll!!! 2. The “beer” at the end of the race – Heineken 0.0. A zero alcohol beer??? What a waste!!! Please have a good beer at the next race. Not only is Heineken 0.0 no alcohol, but it’s gross! Again, Do better, Rock N Roll!

I usually loathe running half marathons in the summer in Virginia – too hot and humid, which is why I had never run the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in Virginia Beach. Always Labor Day weekend, which is always very hot and humid! I decided to take my chances this year, because it was announced that this would be the last year in Virginia Beach. It was very well organized (which I expected, because that is what I had come to expect with Rock N Roll races). The expo was well planned out and well spaced out, given the COVID protocols, which relieved me. Rock N Roll themed masks were given out with our race swag. The start was organized into 7 corrals in each of 2 waves. 12 runners were released every 4 seconds and were spaced out side by side and divided by barriers to keep spacing. It was normal VA Beach Labor Day weather – sunny and warm. There were bands and DJs throughout the race, which is typical of Rock N Roll events. There were ample water and gatorade stations and SIS gels were available (although I don’t like the taste of those). At the finish, there was a band and snacks and over 21 runners were given Heineken 0.0 beer (I don’t understand non-alcoholic beer – not a fan). All in all, I was glad I participated in the last ever Rock N Roll Half Marathon in VA Beach.

I had been wanting to do a Vacation Race for several years, and finally got the chance. I was not disappointed! This race had fantastic scenery, was well organized and my medal stands out among my many medals on the wall! There were more than enough hydration stations along the route, and the honey stinger gels and fruit were plentiful and tasty! I can’t wait to do another Vacation Race!

Awesome race! Had a ball! Well organized, large race. It was very cold, but a perfect day for my PR. The race support was great with plenty of water/gatorade/gel stations. Large finishers medal. I love Philly and this was a great way to get Pennsylvania under my belt. The only thing I would have enjoyed more is if the post race food was Cheesesteaks and pretzels!

This was my 1st ever marathon, but not my first ever Shamrock event (I did the Half marathon the year before) and not my first J&A event. J&A events are always well put together, and this was no exception. The problem is the mid-March weather in VA, which is always unpredictable and is often awful. At the start of the race, the temps were about 35 degrees and it was raining. About 10 minutes into the race, it stopped and it appeared that the skies were clearing and the sun was going to come out to play. However, about 10 minutes later, the wind kicked up (to probably 30-40 mph) and it started to snow. Then, the snow mixed with freezing rain\sleet and that continued (sideways because of the wind) off and on for the remainder of the race. Miserable!!! Because of the weather, the bands and DJs that usually line the route, disappeared and so did the fans. It was a cold, wet, lonely race. Running through Ft. Story at around the 18-21 mile mark, part of the road was flooded and soldiers were guiding us around the flooded parts (thank you for your service)! I don’t like to make excuses, but the weather sapped me. All in all, if it wasn’t for the weather, this would have been a great race. There was food and free beer and a band in a massive tent at the finish, but I was so tired, wet and cold, I just had my wife drive me home, while I sat on my frozen hands on the heated seats in the car…

J&A puts on great races. This was no exception, but the weather sucked. At the start of the race, there was freezing rain, which continued for probably half the race. Had to dodge multiple large puddles and flooding. Despite the weather, there were ample water/gatorade/gel stations and plenty of course support. The Shamrock races always have a great post-race party with a band, great food and free beer inside a humongous tent on the oceanfront. It was great for my first ever half marathon.
