Florida Road Races really knows how to put one on. They are timely (which is always appreciated), organized, responsive, and respectful (especially during COVID times). The races courses are nice and spread out. In my experience, the runners are all very respectful and make room for faster/slower participants. Overall they are worth every penny for runners of all levels.
Downside…I wish the races held at Ft DeSoto (in September and October) started earlier. Especially for runners in the long distance races. The morning portion is nice and shaded…but when that sun comes up around 8am…it is BRUTAL on that course. There is no shade and barely a breeze.

This 5k was for a great cause, I believe it was also the first year for the organizers. The course was through a massive outlet mall parking lot, so there was a lot of zig-zagging. I don’t think a lot of runners were used to that, and you had to pay attention to the cones and arrows or you’d run off. Overall a decent, quick Saturday morning race. Parking (due to the location) was ample, no issues or overcrowding. Also centrally located right off I-75 and SR 54. Since it was a smaller race, there were ample port-o bathrooms with a hand washing station available.
They definitely have a few kinks to work out, mainly the race start times. They asked runners to be present no later than 0700 so that there were no lines. That’s fine, no biggie since I had to get my stuff anyway. The issue is all of the information stated the 5k start time was 0800. We did not start until just after 0830…runners had to stand around for 1.5 hours before we had a chance to start….which in Florida just means it keeps getting hotter and hotter. It was also extremely difficult to hear the girl announcing everything, even though she was about 50 feet in front of me and the other runners.
If you’re looking for a quick Saturday morning run, with no frills and for a good cause, this one is perfect.
