Came back after a year off to see if I could better my time here… I couldn’t! A beautiful, rolling course with a gradual uphill around mile 11 that dashed my dreams. One negative was having to deal with more cars driving (slowly) on the course when they were trying to get on the freeway – I don’t remember having this issue 2 years ago.

Ran it for the third time – slight change in route near the beginning of the race from previous years. Mostly flat, fast course with a few vineyards sprinkled in. Usually nice and cool weather-wise. I had my half marathon PR here a few years ago.

Despite the rain this year (or perhaps in part because of it), this was one of the most beautiful courses I’ve seen – vineyards and rolling hills everywhere along the famed Silverado Trail (which is all paved, rest assured). Very PR-able.

I’m probably not being totally objective here, since I’m disappointed from having trained on the course for the most part and finishing well, well short of a PR. But overall it’s a fair, easy course, with a good portion of it along the wooded (and somewhat slanted) Santa Rosa Creek Trail. A pretty nice beer festival accompanies the finish. And the finisher’s medal for the full marathon is the biggest medal I’ve ever seen!

This was my first marathon, and I ran it a few weeks after my father passed away so it’s tough for me to be totally objective here. But most of it is undeniably beautiful – running along the Marina, on the Golden Gate Bridge, in Golden Gate Park, and finishing near Pac Bell (I know – AT&T) Park. Probably not a PR course due to the elevation changes, but the cool Bay Area fog definitely helps. I’ll happily return one of these years.

Came back the following year thinking that I’d benefit from having course knowledge… and ran it 4 minutes slower the second time! Still trying to find the courage to go back…
