I just ran what is dubbed the “Friendliest Half Marathon in America”, the Richmond Half Marathon. The course was a great mix of mural art through the city portion and beautiful fall foliage in the Bryan Park portion. The spectator support was incredible. They were offering up along the course (not the finish line) beer, shots of whiskey, pickle juice, bacon, Slim Jims, tissues, high fives and hugs. Very friendly.

Billed as the best 13.1 miles in New England, the Covered Bridges Half Marathon in Woodstock, VT. Without a doubt it was the most scenic course I ever ran, which says a lot since this was my 50th half marathon in 12 states. I understand why runners from all over the country (3 from Delaware) sold out the registration for this race faster than a Taylor Swift concert. Well organized. Friendly staff and runners.

My favorite race, the Bird-In-Hand Half Marathon in the heart of Amish Country has become a destination race for runners from all over the country. This year they had runners from as far as Texas, Florida, California and Hawaii. It’s understandable with the great warmth, welcoming community vibe from start to finish. Getting to run through the working farms, corn fields, and backroads, trying to avoid road apples (aka horse poop) makes this one of most unique and enjoyable races anywhere. Plus a delicious post -race BBQ and the coolest finisher medal a real horseshoe.
