The course follows roads/jeep trails through BLM land. Much of the course is runnable with short sections of rock that is a bit challenging that add to fun of the course. The course was well marked. The area is open to jeep and trucks that drive up and down these rocky areas. I didn’t see any on the course, but others did. Also some sandy areas, but none were too long. A little long between a couple of the aid stations (~8 miles) so you need to plan for that. I finished before it rained too much, but people finishing later said the course became difficult to run with the water/mud. The 100-milers had a long, cold & muddy night. I found the aid stations to be adequately stocked, mainly pre-packaged options and no hot food except for the aid station at start/finish when you are heading out for your second lap, but several other runners complained.
Overall, a very fun race & course.

I have hiked the McKenzie river and the area is gorgeous so I was really looking forward to this race. The race starts out with a short out and back on gravel road before you hit the single track. Once you are on the single track there is virtually nowhere to pass until you reach the first aid station at about 5 miles. Unless you are up in the front it is a slow, slow race until the first aid station. A bit of the race is on basalt which is easy to trip on and not at all forgiving if you fall. I ended up walking or going slow in these areas.

I was expecting more views of the river, but was disappointed at how infrequently you got to see it.

This course is a rails to trails with less than 300 feet of elevation gain for the 50k. There is one section where you have to run through a creek for about 50 feet and the trail into and out of the creek is mucky, but other than that the course is flat gravel or asphalt. This is a small race (which I prefer), but the aid stations are well stocked and there is hot soup and drinks at the finish. Enjoyed the race and was impressed with the production for such a small race.
