The last several years the weather was pretty good for running. The race is always exactly in the morning of daylight saving time change (you gain an extra hour during the night). The parking and organization of the race is excellent. I always ran the Clovis half which is the lightest, you can choose the Fresno half which is more hilly (but not too bad). The marathon is kinda the combination of two with some extras. The start and finish park is very beautiful, the cities are nice. Some years ago I ran a PB here (~1:28:30), but it’s perfect for leisure running.

I like the newest distance: the mountain goat edition: how many times you can summit within 4 hours time frame. It’s harder than you think, I made huge positive splits every loop (managed to put in 5 loops. You are off-road but always close to the race center. The terrain is very tough on your feet and legs. The temperature can be hot, especially for those who are not from the central valley. During the 5th loop it even crossed my mind if that feat was one of the toughest in my life. A must have for those who like tough challenges. Brilliant race. Top contenders got in 8 loops. The organizers always have a full keg of General Sherman brew. All kinds of refreshments. No drink on the summit though.

The scenery is breathtaking. I learned a lot about giant sequoias, I sacrifized a ton of time to read signs on the trail and stop at every giant. The weather was just perfect, the trails is great. There is a river crossing, next year I’ll cross that bare feet. The organizers are unique, funny characters. It’s very close to Fresno. Will go next year for sure again. My watch measured a little less distance then 30miler.

The course (50K) is not crazy hard compared to other 50Ks. The distance is just right there. San Joaquin Valley is beautiful, you run next to the river most of the time. Aid stations are evenly distributed, well packed and helpful (you can even get even vazeline for chafing or ibuprofen). Weather was very ideal. My performance: I took this race absolutely as leasure (1+ hour at the aid stations :D)

It wouldn’t be as hard if I wasn’t running two other half marathons the previous weekends before that. I’d compare the toughness of the course with the similarly hard SAR Wild Run half. The scenery is beautiful and I had a fun time. The distance was a tiny bit longer than a half. I only didn’t run this in 2016 because I was sick. Otherwise I’ll always try to go for it. The organizers are great.

The course is almost all downhill, but I gave 4 shoes for difficulty? Well, you understand that if you run that race. 3 miles flying downhill is fun, at 6 miles you’ll pretty much feel your quads and hamstrings, and soon your quads will beg you to stop. But you cannot really stop since it’s so downhill. The only thing what you can do is a Jens Voigt quote to you legs: “Shut up legs!”. I totally enjoyed this race multiple times though, I just warn you to not take it lightly! And if you have any knee or ankle problems, or some muscle injuries I would probably not advise this race due to the toll on legs. At least if you push it at a pace like me.
Besides that it’s a usual Sole to soul race: very good organization, refreshments, professional. Only thing is that the restrooms were too full at the latest edition, so much so that I didn’t have a chance to go. I’m sure they gonna improve on that because the 2014 edition was better in that respect.
