It was 90+ degrees on race day that Mem Day Wknd ’16, and no one in Vermont was prepared for it. They called the race about three hours into it. I had already dropped out, however. At mile 15. I was totally bummed, as you can imagine, but I wanted to give a shout out to amazing race organizers and local EMTs and first responders of Burlington for making a tough but important decision. The crowds and music and scenery was great, in my opinion. I wish I’d finished but it wasn’t in the cards that day. I would like to go back and try again sometime. My family and I really enjoyed our stay in Burlington, VT. If you haven’t checked it out, it’s a really neat city.

I wanted to like this race a lot because it’s so convenient to my home, and I like the idea of running around the Middlesex Fells Reservation, but unfortunately this half marathon course changed several times in the lead up to race day and the final course was very uninspiring. Long stretches of the course are on parkways with little scenery or convenient spots for spectators to gather. It was approximately two long loops around the Spot Pond reservoir in Stoneham/Medford MA. This year, the date of the race is earlier, too. I may have signed up for it if it was in November again – – but October was too soon for me to train adequately. I really did love the T-shirt from last year, though. One of my rave race shirts, definitely! great work logo 🙂

The best part of this race was the lead up — meaning the B.A.A. offered great tips on training, plans, info sessions, lots of good comms. The worst part of this race was getting there. Taking the T is not convenient, even if you leave near a T station (b/c the start isn’t exactly close to the orange line). Shuttling to and from the parking garage at the convention center took a ton of time, too. Because it’s in the park and at the zoo, friends and family can’t watch you, either. The after-race B.A.A. festivities were very good, which is important because there’s absolutely no where to grab a bite or get brunch in the immediate area. Honestly, I skipped it this year and I don’t plan on doing it again anytime soon… but I am glad I checked this box and did it once.
