Great downhill course – mostly gradual but some parts were rolling hills with sharper declines. Of the 19 runners in our group, 17 PR’d and 6 BQ’d.
Well organized, beautiful course.
Great post-race atmosphere – the BQ gong is a nice touch.
Take the 4am shuttle. It’s early, but super casual start line area with places to stay warm and relax.
Not a lot of crowd support, but you’ll be running so fast you won’t notice.

Surf City is one of my favorite half marathons every year.
Pros: super casual and fun environment, fairly flat and fast course (1 hill early), great finishers medal, one of the better expos, Superbowl Sunday which means less guilt eating and drinking during the game, corrals are really easy to get in so a pretty worry-free and easy start. Also, it’s part of the beach cities challenge which (for those who like bling) has a great medal.
Cons: fairly boring course – it’s a out and back that’s along the water but not really much of a view, parking – it’s horrible – huge lines to get into the lots and they make you drive through ones that are full before you get to the ones that have spaces, not nearly enough parking attendants (get there super early – you can hang out at the expo), not a big fan of the shirts (at least the design), but that’s personal preference, mediocre crowd support – giving the number of runners, there should be more people out on the course cheering – but it really lacks spectators
