The course is a good one to get a PR. I didn’t because it was hotter and more humid than I expected for early October. You take a train to get to the start; that worked out okay. The toilets were out of toilet paper an hour before the race started. Also, they were out at the finish. Fortunately, I have been to enough races and know to bring my own. Gels were handed out at 2 locations during the race but they were very difficult to open. I easily added a minute or two to my time trying to open the gels. Post-race refreshments were okay, but I crave something salty after the race and they did not have anything.

Well-organized race with good communication leading up to the race. Easy bib pick-up. Nice tech T-shirt and medal. The course was flat but there were five hairpin turns (180 degrees) which slowed down my momentum. The race was downtown and it went past many of the major sites (Big Ben, Pariliament, Westminster Abbey, & the Eye).

Could not run the normal course this year because of some road fall-out close to Big Sur. So, it was an out-and-back course from Carmel. Therefore, we missed some of the really scenic areas (like Bixby Bridge). The course was tougher than I expected due to the rolling hills and the strong winds. We also were only allowed to run on one side of the road so it was more difficult to find flat surfaces to run on.

You have to get up early to get to the start line; most shuttle buses left at 3:45-4:00 AM. But it is well worth it. The course was tough with several hills (one that is 2 miles long) and very windy conditions (10-20 mph, I heard). But the scenery was spectacular. This was the first marathon where I was kind of sorry to come to the end. Also, there were several race week events where you could meet other runners (e.g. pub run, shake-out run, happy hour at the expo, pasta dinner, and post-race party). Finally, the race organizers did a top-notch job in making sure everything ran smoothly.

Flat, scenic course through downtown. There are lots of turns at the beginning of the race and it is very crowded. So, it is important to get a good starting position. The first wave needed to be organized better; there seemed to be a very wide range of runners with paces ranging from sub 6:00/mile to 8:30+. I was in the first wave and it took me 3-4 miles before I had enough space to run consistently at my target pace. The bag drop-off & pick-up wait times were ridiculous – 20+ minutes before the race and 40+ minutes after (in cold, windy conditions).

This was my sixth time running the half-marathon. It is a well-run race over a flat course with very few turns. The shirt and medals have always been nice. There’s beer and music at the finish festival (although this year there was a DJ instead of a live band as in previous years).

There was a long wait to get on the bus at the Capitol. I was there before 5 am but I was not on a bus until 45 minutes later. The bus got to the starting location at 6:30 am (30 minutes before the start). Fortunately, there were plenty of toilets, so the wait was short and I was able to get to the starting line a few minutes before the race started. The course was fast with very few turns…a couple of hills in the first half, but the course was mostly flat or downhill. The aid stations were every 2 miles and were well organized. Beer and burritos were served at the finish.

This was 3rd time running Boston. The course still beat me. Although this was my best time at Boston, it was still 10 minutes off my PR. I successfully went out slow for the downhill portion, which was my plan. But, I still cramped up at the end (perhaps due to dehydration). Next time, I will drink something at every stop.

Boston knows how to put a marathon. The whole city celebrates during race week with billboards, store displays, and sales. Runners and visitors can be seen walking around town in their newly purchased Boston Marathon shirts and jackets. It is all very colorful. The course is tough with the first 4 miles downhill stressing your quads. I always seem to run the first half too fast. I will try for a better time next year.

Evening run was a nice change of pace. Fast course – up & back on PCH (only one turn). Unfortunately, the wind blew smoke from the beach fire pits and barbeques onto the course, there was some smoke inhalation on the first half. The 10-mile, 10K, and 5K races started at same time and location, So, I had to weave through the walkers and slower runners from the other races for the last few miles. Other than that, the race was well organized.

Parking was a mess – the wait at the ticket kiosk was over an hour. Should have had free parking until noon to save everybody the hassle. The 10K race was crowded since the 5K race started 5-10 minutes before and we caught up to the slower 5K runners within the first mile. Also, both races finished at the same place so we had to weave around the 5K runners again at the finish. For the entry price, I was expecting a tech shirt instead of cotton. Finish Festival was minimal but had a good blues band.

I heard that the weather was worst it has been in 30 years. The race crew did not seem to be prepared for the heavy rain. The staging area was under a tent, but we stood in mud & puddles. The walk from the staging area to the starting line took around 45 minutes in the rain. I was soaked before I started. I also should have better prepared for the weather. With 50,000+ runners, there was a smooth start due to the multiple waves. The course was mostly flat winding through the city of Boulder, but I was not used to running at 5000+ elevation. I thought arriving a week early would do the trick, but I still ran around 2 minutes off my PR. The race ended in the Univ. of Colorado stadium, which was a unique experience. There were lots of booths set up outside the stadium with free food, drinks, and other stuff. There was an elite runners team race at the end, which we could watch on the big screen and see them finish once they entered the stadium. Finally, there was a Memorial Day ceremony that included paratroopers from each branch of the military parachuting into the stadium. Overall, a great experience and we were out before 1 PM.

This race was more of a fun run since it had over 40,000 runners. It was hard to get a good pace going. Spokane is great. This race seems to be one of their main events of the year. There were several bands playing along the route, as well as a lot of cheering spectators. The race is inexpensive ($20) so there are not many freebies. There were vendors at the finish line selling food and drinks. One thing that I have not seen in other races was that there were people along the race course selling drinks, food, and ice cream (I guess this was mostly for the ones walking the course).

The course was very flat so it is good if you are going for a PR. The beach scenery got a little boring; 16 miles of the race was along PCH or the boardwalk. The water stations were spaced appropriately. Several bands along the way provided entertainment, which was nice. A lot of cheering spectators helped to keep the motivation high.

Well run race. Kind of crowded where they located the finish line. Flat course mostly around parking lots. Not very scenic. I did not like the T-shirt design. MORE

This race is very well organized. It is a nice course through Atlanta. It was raining this year so there were not as many people along the course to cheer us on. They start in waves, so if you get in the correct wave, you do not need to dodge the other 60000 runners.

Since I had only recently restarted my running program, I did not have a race time to submit during the registration. Therefore, I was put in the second-to-last wave (~2-hour runners). Even though I started at the very front of the wave, I was zig-zagging the whole course trying to get past the walkers and slower runners.
